When was the last time a mayor ran for President?

Imho the only mayors that are important enough are those of New York City and Los Angeles.

Neither, but if I had to pick, Landrieu.

I don't think either will, but of those two, JBE is more likely.

Landrieu seems like a strong candidate. He could do well with southerners and he could do well with blacks because he tore down those confederate monuments. He's been fairly public recently, so I wouldn't be completely surprised if he ran.

If Landrieu ran, I would question my sanity.

Likely neither. I think Edwards is likely to seek reelection in 2019, and serve out the whole term if he's reelected. Landrieu might be an interesting candidate, but if he runs, it'll probably be a publicity stunt like Rudy Giuliani's 2008 campaign.

Giuliani in 08 I believe.

Neither will run for president, but JBE could conceivably be chosen for VP, though the chances are pretty low.

Technically, Sanders and O'Malley were both (at one point) Mayors. Before Giuliani, I believe it was Jimmy Griffin(1996 Democratic race) and Larry Agran(1992 Democratic race).

Probably neither, but Bel Edwards would do better and win some of the Rust Belt back and some of the South.

One of these things is not like the other.

How can he do well with Southerners if he took down a Confederate monument.

I assume most southerners don't support the confederacy.

Most liberal Southerners wouldn't vote for a pro-lifer. If JBE ran (which he won't) he would need to win a lot of nominal Democrats and Blue Dogs, who are sympathetic to the Confederacy, at least on a "heritage not hate" level, if not an explicitly racist level.

Edwards, who'd be a sneakily strong VP choice for someone like Booker or Gillibrand.

It wouldn't cause popularity among Southerners, but that isn't controversial. Not even dog whistlers like Rush Limbaugh and Jesse Waters will touch it.

Edwards can't run for re-election AND run for President.  And he hasn't been on the job so long as to really present viability.

Being the VP isn't out of the question; he'll be coming off of a re-election if that happens.  But I can't see Democrats being very happy about him not running for re-election.  I would see him as a good bet for 2024 if he were re-elected.

Edwards is ProLife, which disqualifies you in the modern Democratic party.
