How should state lieutenant governors get elected? Via ticket election together with the gubernatorial candidate or through a separate election? If you vote for a ticket election, how should the candidate be selected? Should the gubernatorial nominee select his or her running mate him/herself like the presidential nominee selects his/her running mate? Or through a separate primary? So, if you vote for a ticket election, use the second vote to determine how the candidate should be chosen.

I'm totally in favor of a ticket election. And the nominee should be able to select his or her running mate. I think it's not so good when governor and lietenant governor are members of different parties (except the governor wants it that way like Alaska's Bill Walker and Byron Mallott). I think a governor, as chief executive, should be able to chose his own team in the executive branch. Therefore I'm also opposed to elected Secretaries of State or Attorneys General. They should be appointed by the governor after senate confirmation like it is the case at the federal level.

I don't have a strong preference either way.

I prefer separate elections for governor and lieutenant governor like it's done in most of the South, but if the two are elected on a ticket I think it's better if the candidate for governor is allowed to select his (or her) running mate (those are the two options I picked).

Abolish the role. It made sense to have an LG back in the day when the governor would leave the state for weeks at a time for travel, but now they're a waste of space.

Not sure what my preference is here.  I know that in Connecticut, the party candidate selects his/her running mate, and they are elected on the same ticket with the gubernatorial candidate.

I think it should work like that. Lt. Gov has the same dynamic as VP on a state as opposed to national level. He/she should be selected by the Gubernatorial nominee and the two should be elected together (as a ticket).

My opinion is as such because in a close election, the Lt. Gov and Gov. can be of different parties, if they're elected separately. Situation in NC currently, if Roy couldn't serve, the (Acting) Gov's party would be different from the elected Gov's party. Dan Forest is Lt. Gov (R-NC). Regardless of party, it's unfair to the voters to allow a party 'coup' like that.

But then what happens if the Governor resigns/dies? Giving the spot to another state official can have some unexpected repercussions, see Arizona 2009.

Separate election entirely. I don't like the idea of tickets for such offices.

Joint tickets, because in the case of death, impeachment or resignation, a member of the same party should assume the office. Some lt. govs become acting gov. when the incumbent leaves his state. I personally prefer the gubernatorial nominee picking his running mate, but would also be ok with a separate primary. The separate election is nonsense and I hope CA changes that one day (just as our horrible jungle primary).

Lieutenant Governor should be a nothing office like the Vice President, so casting a vote for the Lieutenant Governor should be casting a contingent vote for Governor. They should run as a ticket.

I don't prefer either. Personally, this is one area where I say leave it to the states.
