Including the CSA Party in Turtledove's latest books. I thought Soulty had started a neo-fascist Southern party at first last year.

As did I. I didn't even take into account Jake Featherston's fictional Southern Nazi Party. I remember Soulty saying that although I'm naming it the Freedom Party it will be nothing like the fictional party or something like that.

Well their are other examples as well. Freedom Party is also the name of Jorg Haider's large neo-fascist party in Austria as well as its sister party in Switzerland.

LOL... I was quite aware of the connection, as I believe I told you both, but I thought it was still a pretty cool name, none-the-less.  Anyone else reading "Drive to the East" BTW.  I'm already on page 250 and I have only had the thing for about a week, and I have been pretty busy almost every day.

Yep I'm reading it. I got it the day it came out, like the nerdy idiot that I am. Smiley I'm at about page 250 or 275. Rather interesting better than most of his recent work in the series, especially American Empire.

I agree.  There is a lot more to keep the story going, it seems, but I think he is running into a bit of a repeatative writing problem in his recent works.  For instance, I'm kinda tired of hereing about how crappy Northern tobacco is.  And he used the exact same description, or a variation on it, every single time; "horse sh**t and hay".  Other than that, I have not had any problems plowing right through it.  I was glad at some of the turns in the sotry.  Particularly who gets knocked off.  Wink

Well he's had the repetition problem ever since Breakthroughs. I was glad though that that biotch got a blindfold and a cigarette. It was much diserved if you ask me and he should have done it a long time ago. Well you have to take the good with the bad. You have to put up with him taking about the crappy northern cigarettes and Sam Carston's ability to get easily suburned in order to get to the good parts in the story, though he is talking about Sam Carston's sunburn a little less now I guess that's because he has a ing war to fight.

I've only got past the first Great War book, I just found them uninteresting. I am reading the WorldWar series about the alien invasion during WW2. That's pretty good.

I agree that the name could use some tweaking, but I don't like "Christian Democratic" because it sounds like an open endorsment of a particular religion.  Though, it could trick newb religious righters to join us Smiley.  j/k

Anyway, what about something like the "Community Alliance Party"?  Not that exactly, but something along those lines.

I understand your concerns, but I have come to think that to have this party be known as the 'Christian Democratic Party' is the best possible compromise solution.  None of the other names really seem to fit, or have too much of a resemblance to the extreme left or extreme right.

I tend to agree with Frodo.

Of course I'd be interested in joining a communitarian party. Wink

At the very least, a list of user-names should be drawn up in preparation for a vote that could be held to determine what this nascent party should call itself.....

Since it's looking like the Farmer-Labor Party will soon fall apart ala the Freedom Party and since some of the more left wing members of that party have the SDP to jump to, I think we should try to resurrect a Populist Party with the more populist members of the Farmer-Labor Party and elements of the Freedom Party. If anyone is interested in that kind of arrangement, post here and we can begin a more serious discussion about naming and forming the party.

The Farmer-Labor Party is dead in all but name -I have already decided to switch parties, though in the interim after the August midterm elections, I will initially register as an independent.

When this party gets its act together, I will register as a member of it.

Much the same here...*also bumping the thread since the election stuff sunk it to page 3*

Reading through WMS's political beliefs, I'm astounded that we agree on quite a good deal.  Some sort of socially right, economically center-left party would be a good home for me.

Go take the Political Compass and put the results in that neat little space Dave Leip set up for us. Now I'm curious. Wink

Yeah, I was rather fond of it myself.

To steal from Bullmoose, it's high time for the Progressive Conservative party! Wink

You know, I certainly wouldn't mind having a founding convention for a Progressive Conservative party...would y'all be interested in pulling something together after the elections?

I actually love all of the names, except for Christian Socialist...I don't think that socialist would be a good term to use.  XDems would work very well too, since I often describe myself as that anyway.
