A working class white man from Vermont or Maine, who has never voted for a Democrat and probably never will[, unless he lives to see the post-Civil Rights GOP.


I'm not trying to bash the post-1964 Republican Party, I'm just saying that Goldwater and his ilk are largely responsible for the GOP losing the Northeast. the differences on policy between Landon and FDR were not that huge, by modern standards.

I'd argue it wasn't Goldwater, but rather Kennedy and the fact that Nixon refused to campaign in New England in 1960, 1968, and 1972.
