In 1944, Vice President Henry Wallace was dropped from the Democratic Party ticket.

Missouri Senator Harry Truman was picked as the Vice Presidential candidate.

If not Truman, who else would have  been a suitable Democratic Vice Presidential nominee in 1944?

Please discuss.

Coke Stevenson, Paul V. McNutt, Scott Lucas, or Alben Barkley. I think Stevenson sounds most likely.

Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas was Roosevelt's second choice for the nomination after Harry Truman. So Douglas might've been picked as the Vice Presidential nominee if not for Truman.

Rayburn and Byrne had too much clout to let Douglas win. For that matter, Rayburn would be a good choice, though he's not as powerful as Stevenson.
