The Joint Chiefs say that NK can only have its nuclear weapons program disarmed through a ground invasion.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41878123

Don't know if this is bad news as it makes Trump more likely to preemptively strike, or if it sends the message that we should only get involved if we're going to go 100% and not just using airstrikes and risking NK reprisal.

The latter, though it probably opens the door to the former

A little of both but more the former because any ground ops would be done largely by US SOF with light footprints and SK SOF and conventional. Potentially the PLA sweeping in from the north against the NKs if it really goes downhill from here.

Any credence to the idea PRC would reunify under Seoul in exchange for US withdrawal from the peninsula?

Aggressive rhetoric would be one thing. But Trump has made it clear by his actions that he has no real comprehension of what hes doing. It's a rat pushing buttons to make lights blink and deliver food, only the buttons are connected to weapons that can kill millions of people.

Rocket Man is threatening the lives of American citizens. After failed efforts of the past administrations, it's finally time to take this matter very seriously. Either they dismantle their nuclear programme and weapons or US will have to do it.

Admiral Blair (USN-Ret.) former head of US Forces Pacific and DNI, favors a strike if NK does a nuclear launch into the Pacific or into the atmosphere. His article on this is at https://spfusa.org/chairmans-message/chairmans-message-trumps-trip-asia-fundamentals-consider-high-stakes-environment/

North Korea going ahead and actually launching a nuke? Even China might retaliate.

Trump's new bromance with Xi isn't going to hurt.  China would literally deal harshly with the Crazy Fat Kid if he did a test nuke.

Somehow, I doubt even Trump is going to get us to start testing nuclear weapons again.

Another tremendous tweet:

"Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me "old," when I would NEVER call him "short and fat?" Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!"

It's about 11,000 km from NK to NYC or Washington DC.

North Korea issues a statement strongly denying that their weapons are offensive:

"Recently, some policy research institutions and media of the U.S. and other Western countries publicized the so called "merciless nuclear attack plan" of the DPRK and claimed that the DPRK is planning random and indiscriminate attacks on the U.S. and Asian countries drawing no distinction between military and civilian targets.

They claim that these projections are based on their study and analysis of the reports by the DPRK's media, however these are nothing but slanders to "demonize" the DPRK by twisting the meaning of our tough stand and absurd paradox worked out by the laymen who lack elementary understanding of the purpose of the DPRK's nuclear deterrence.

...

To make it clear once again, the DPRK's nuclear force which targets none other than the U.S. is the reliable deterrent to prevent a nuclear war and firmly defend peace on the Korean peninsula by thoroughly eradicating the half-a-century long unilateral nuclear blackmail and threat from the U.S."

US has in the last 20 years bombed dozen countries, changed or attempted to change regimes in those countries, invaded a few and has special operations going in many more. It's really not hard to imagine why North Korea is doing this. They did not threaten any other country directly and they're surely not supporting terrorism around the world. At the same time Saudis who are US's biggest ally besides Israel in the Middle East is waging a war on Yemen which has killed thousands of people and put tens of thousands on a brink of starvation. But sure, NK is all over MSM, they launched a missile near it's own borders.

Look, we all know Trump is more popular with America's opponents than he is with Americans or our friends and allies, but do you seriously expect us to believe a majority of whatever sham assembly North Korea has would vote for him?

Experts say North Korea's latest ICBM test shows they can now hit New York City or Washington DC.

Their last step is to be able to fit a nuclear warhead on it and it still able to go that far.

Basically, the only test more provocative they can do to further escalate this is to do a nuclear test via ICBM in the Pacific, it seems.

What will the US reaction be? Or China's/Russia's?
