I think here in Michigan, he'd have to win Oakland County by a fair margin, stay above 30% in Flint and Detroit, and run up Trump margins in the rural areas.

Why do you assume the candidate is a he?  Very, very sexist.

There is none. Without Trumpism both states are fool's gold for the GOP.

Governor Rick Snyder (R-MI), Governor Tom Corbett (R-PA) and Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) would all disagree.

I chose not to go further back so as to just keep it post-Obama results, but if we are sticking to just Presidential matchups, Bush almost won both.

Keep in mind that Specter and Santorum easily won their senate races, while Bush simultaneously lost.

The GOP candidates running this year besides Trump were distinctly to the right of Bush, besides Christie/Kasich.

MIchigan- within 3 points in oakland, hit 30% in Wayne, as similar to trump's margins as possible in Upper Michigan and the peninsula, 2-1 victory in kent county, and maybe win muskegon.
