This is a sure way to cripple the U.S. economy in the long term.  The birth rate is declining and the population is aging. Immigrants and their children are expected to offset this and make up an increasing share of the working-age population.

Not really in favor of cutting legal immigration. I just hope that if this passes it really does help the economy.

I can see the economic benefits to only admitting skilled workers, but then I can see the economic disadvantages to preventing low-skilled workers who do jobs most Americans don't want to do. It also could limit the amount of people that come to America to work and then return home with more money than they started with. That's what my ancestors did.

I can assure you that the no welfare for new immigrants part of this proposal is the most popular with his supporters.

I don't know if this will help the economy, but my incredibly tiny brain says that this means less brown people so I'm all for it.

Isn't this similar to the Australian and Canadian systems?

But but but I was repeatedly assured that Trump's bigoted and xenophobic rhetoric on the campaign trail was "only talking about the criminal ones."

I believe that, from what I read, it was inspired by the Camadian system.

Trump did specifically say immigrants and minorities are being affected by higher levels as well.

Also why are people saying that stopping low skilled workers means stopping minorities? That doesn't seem right.

I highly HIGHLY doubt this is race based. Again, I would prefer to not see this passed, but I highly doubt there are any racial motives.

I don't know how anyone can make a statement like that with a straight face after Trump's campaign and its reception.

Luckily this bill is DOA in the Senate and probably the House too.

Most legal immigrants to the US are East Asian worker bees. This is dumb as hell.

Is it really, though? I mean I think it could only pass both houses with bare margins, but given how anti-immigrant the GOP base is and how much they care, this bill is definitely not DOA.

That was one of the worst press conferences ive ever had the displeasure of watching. Stephen Miller's faux outrage was nauseating.
