I think if Corbyn had been prime minister after World War Two rather than Atlee or Churchill, the UK would’ve joined the Soviet block.

LOL Reagan clearly told in that campaign why America needed to be made great again. He said taxes were too high, government had gotten too big, the previous administrations seemed to be helpless to deal with inflation, and America was getting pushed around by our enemies .

We should repeal the 2nd Amendment, seize everyone's guns and do what Australia did. Ordinary people do not need guns.

If they refuse to give up their guns and pose a threat to the army/police they should be labeled as traitors to America and charged with treason, and if they fire their weapons, then all means necessary should be used to stop them.

I strongly stand by my comments.
In that case, I strongly stand against your candidacy for our legislature.

Ok cool, I didn't want your silly support anyways, you're not even in my district, I'd rather have nice people supporting me than a deplorable.

Most people generally prefer that their elected officials actually respect constitutional rights

I do not consider gun rights as a constitutional right no matter what the ancient document says

Then you don't know what Constitutional rights are, LOL.

I'm fully aware of what they are and I'd fight like hell to get rid of it.

It Requires 2/3 of both Houses of Congress for a change in the constitution to even be proposed and then 3/4 of the states to ratify it(Even if you get 2/3 of both houses , it will be impossible to get 3/4 of the states)

Democrats could very well get 3/4 of the state legislatures if 2018 and 2020 are Dem Waves as expected, and then 2022 ends up being another 1934.

Its 3/4 of the states(not 3/4 of the legislatures) which means 38/50 states have to ratify it.

Here's 13 states where both houses wont flip dem by 2022

Idaho
Wyoming
Utah
Nebraska(Non-Partisan but it will be majority comprised of Conservatives)
South Dakota
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Alabama
Mississippi
Tennesse
South Carolina
Kentucky
West Virginia

obviously TR then Lincoln. Both would obviously be Democrats today.

Im not sure about that, as the current politician that most like both those Presidents are Republicans .

Most like TR is John McCain

Most like Lincoln is Bruce Rauner

The distortion of TR's legacy continues it seems. And fu'cking Bruce Rauner as any comparison to Abraham Lincoln is laughable.

Ok Rauner was a bad comparison but Lincoln would be most like a moderate Republican today(and since Rauner was one and from Illinois i made that comparison)

Ah yes. The party that defends the Confederacy and their traitor statues and goes berserk when black people kneel would be a great fit for a modern-day Lincoln.

The vast majority of  Republicans 100% denounced that

No we are getting mad because that action is disrespectful to the flag.

This is why it should have been done covertly against them and not out in the open.

This is how it should have been done:

1. Sign Free Trade Agreements with other countries all around the world(like India, the Pacific Countries, Latin America)

2. Once a new free trade deal is signed, and say that country(or countries) we just signed a free trade deal with can give us the same products China is giving us at around the same price, you impose tariffs on China on those products. At the same time though dont tariff any other country for that product(this will incentivize corporations in the US to get products from these new countries and not China)

3. Then once corporations start to get more of their products from these other countries, you will have reduced the reliance on US trade with China

4. Once the reliance on trade with China has been greatly reduced with China(and only once this has been achieved) , you can tell them to end their unfair trade practices, and expansionist foreign policy or we will go full on protectionist against you .

you know Mitt Romney proposed a similar plan to that

They can do that but they will always be the guys who defend nazis to me.

The only Nazis who are at all relevant in this world are in charge of China and N. Korea. The only one defending them on these forums is you. Begone.
Marxism-Leninism is nazism, typical conservative.

Lots of Chinese/DPRK bombs dropping at the heads of brown people in the Middle East, oh wait, this is the promoter of freedom and democracy (more like promoter of jihadism) the United States.

The closest things to a nazi government actually receive lots of money from the US: Saudi Arabia, Israel and Ukraine. China and  DPRK are dictatorships of the proletariat just like Marx conceived, the complete opposite of nazism.

This poster just posted something outrageously anti-semitic  and then in the same post defends the DPRK.

WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see the Palestinian pogroms this week? Oops, I bet western media told you they were defending themselves from terrorists.

Israel operates like apartheid but it's fine, they can vote therefore they are a beautiful democracy!!!

Israel is a democracy and it is at least a million more times democratic than the Chinese
China is a democracy who operates in a different way than what the west wants.

The chinese have a lot of power at the local level, just like cubans (last election turnout in Cuba was 93%, in the US was pathetic, under 60%, last midterm was under 40%) but the west has told people one-party states can't be democracies, they don't tolerate dictatorships of the proletariat who, despite their name, are the most democratic systems. Not a coincidence 87% of China believe their country is at the right direction, in America it has been under 50% for nearly 15 years and only government lies to boost patriotism (like Iraq) pushed it over 50%.

What’s your opinion about  the USSR
The same, the West had to literally create the largest miliary force ever (NATO) to stop it, the west has always feared socialism so they need to say it doesn't work every time when they are the ones trying to sabotage it, also, it only ceased to exist because Gorbachev was working for foreign interests who wanted to promote "democracy", in the end they got neoliberalism, drunk Yeltsin and 3 years docked from their life expectancy, and the west still asks why they love Putin so much. Putin is your creation, y'all.

The entire Israel General Discussion thread right now is like a huge party of absurt and ignorant hot takes. It's like you take an army of trolls who know nothing save for what they read in New York Times or Al Jazeera and add it to the usual dogmatic racism of Famous Mortimer, who views the world through an ultra-nationalist lens and consistently fails to differentiate European immigration, Israeli issues, Mexican immigration the the U.S. and everything else, trying to make everything fit into his racist dogma. This creates a serious hot mess:

This is my prediction of the 2044 electoral map.

Basically the slow trend of Racial polarization continues to a point where Republicans are winning 80% of the White vote, while Democrats are winning 90% of the Nonwhite vote. This results in very closely divided elections (in both the electoral and popular vote) who's outcome are solely based on Republicans turning out as many Whites as possible (primarily by using Racist appeals against Nonwhites), and Democrats turning out as many Nonwhites as possible (primarily by using Racist appeals against Whites). Economic issues are still discussed in campaigns, but only in an extremely racialized way, while Cultural issues dominate the discussion. This results in a very unstable and borderline Third-world country (America's economic and military power has diminished significantly due to a major economic crash caused by a massive equity bubble and over leveraged Corporate debt in the 2020s, combined with a embarrassing military defeat by Russia and China in the 2030s), in which elections are followed by large-scale civil unrest by whichever side loses them.

He thinks basically all undocumented immigrants are criminals, and every gang member was a normal kid before they got caught up in s**t. Us middle class whites literally cannot comprehend what it feels like to go through the s**t that would drive someone into a gang. You know nothing about these kids lives, yet you judge them as literally inhuman without a second thought.

Next time I have a bad hair day, I’m gonna consider joining a violent criminal cabal. Two wrongs don’t make a right, and you know that.

Because people who join violent gangs are evil , and people shouldn’t show any sympathy to them .

Should have known my point would go in one ear and out the other...

You were the person who called me a horrible person for not empathizing with people who join terrorist groups as well(Like Omar Khadar).

Yeah, dismissing people as just evil without even trying to understand what drove them to do what they did after being called on it is kind of bad.

A reminder why this thread is named this way:

WI Dems need to disband. This is their death knell. Where were all the people that mocked me for saying this was a Solid R race?
We'd sooner see a Governor Cordray (and that has a 3% shot of happening) than a Governor Roys/Evers. That's a fact.

WI is trending R and will become a Lean R state but it wont become as Republican as Ohio

Lol, Wisconsin is not a Republican state because Trump won it, that was due to the collapse of Clinton among rust-belt voters, many of whom are Democrats. In fact, the fastest growing areas of Wisconsin are the Democratic areas and the rural areas are always swing areas. Kerry won WI by only 0.4%. But go on, tell yourself that Wisconsin is a Safe R state because Trump.

Trump actually underperformed in WI

Most of other Republicans win WI by at least 2 points .

It was Walker who made WI GOP not Trump

As you have indicated, the vast majority of Confederate monuments were erected in the 1910's & 20's when Southern states were enacting Jim Crow laws.
There was also a significant, yet smaller spike in the 1950's & 60's during the Civil Rights movement.

See this graphic on this website (link below), showing the numbers and distribution of monuments over time. The article also points out that:
The chart illustrates upticks in the construction of Confederate monuments on courthouse grounds after the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson case in 1896 upheld state segregation laws. The construction of monuments outside of schools jumped after the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education ruling, in which the Supreme Court deemed state laws segregating public schools to be unconstitutional.

So you can drop your "leftists want to abolish place and history" shtick.
All the evidence above shows that Southerners weren't really concerned about "history" when erecting these monuments. But instead, it was about using them as symbols of hate and intimidation.

http://theweek.com/speedreads/718507/striking-graphic-reveals-construction-confederate-monuments-peaked-during-jim-crow-civil-rights-eras

Southern states started enacting Jim Crow laws in the late 19th century, though. Plus, as your graph indicates, the largest spike in public Confederate commemoration was already on the decline when the Klan was reformed in the 1910s. If anything, the strongest correlation is with the aging of Civil War veterans and the passage of the Civil War from people's living memory. Which makes perfect sense.

It "makes perfect sense" to Neo-Nazis, Klansmen and white supremacists.

It makes sense to the people whose forefathers bore the brunt of the most destructive war in the history of the United States.

It makes sense to the people whose forefathers' main purpose of fighting was to preserve the act of enslaving other human beings (for money). The fact that they (the South) "bore the brunt" of the American Civil War (versus the North) was both justified and a grace to all humanity.

The vast majority of monuments are depicting their leaders, and not the sheep the leaders employed (and fooled) to fight for them. Their leaders were intelligent (and rich) and knew exactly what their true cause was (and not "State's rights" bulls**t).

Muhhh the South is nothing but evil scum, HP!

How can something that is fundamentally true be ignorant or absurd? Lincoln being a garden variety Victorian age white supremacist doesn't mean he's not a FF still, nor does Lee fighting for the south dent his status as a FF. Let's face it, you're just butthurt that your alcoholic, stroke ravaged nominee was beat by a rookie and you're taking it out on the south.

Because it is GROSSLY misleading. As the best response to the post simply noted, actions spoke louder than words.

Lee also led an army which waged war against the United States

The whole big picture hurt Hoover.

The Okies and Arkies that moved to California did, however, become the base of Reagan Democrats in central California.  The GOP lean in places like Bakersfield is the result of the descendents of the Okies and Arkies who brought their Southern heritage with them to California.

TIL "Reagan Democrats" existed almost five decades before Reagan's Presidency.

this is real - here's a foundational academic history on the okies who went to Orange County.

Suburban Warriors, by Lisa McGirr

It's the "Reagan Democrats" part that's absurd.

plus the idea of Reagan Democrats including the voters of Orange County is absurd as Goldwater won that county as well.

This isn't the Simple Truths thread.

The 2nd half is what’s totally absurd

The State of the US in 1988 or even 1992 was way better than it was in 1980
