It was virtually tied in 2012, but Clinton won by 20 points in 2016. It is also the whitest county in New Mexico (75% non-hispanic white). So what the heck happened in this county?

Probably more Hispanics coming out to vote.

But Trump did much better in most of the heavily hispanic rural areas, and his numbers were stable with Romney in Bernalillo county.

Johnson got nearly 14% of the vote, which is more than double the third party showings from 2012. A lot of Romney voters probably defected to Johnson.

It's also well-educated and has a national laboratory.

Non-hispanic whites we're using in this case. The census is pretty screwed up in the US (with how they define hispanics, and a load of other crap). For me, its on a person to person basis. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz look regular white guys, while Julian Castro looks more mixed.

Well educated and well off, probably similar to the towns on the Gold Coast that went for Romney but swung bigly to HRC.

It has a national laboratory, so lots of government employees.

Looks like it has the lowest percentage of child poverty of any county in the nation.

Wikipedia gives good reasoning, albeit a little oudated:
In a study conducted by American City Business Journals in 2004, Los Alamos County topped the list as the best place to live in America in terms of quality of life. This was attributed to the high levels of job stability, income and education of Los Alamos residents, many of whom are employed as scientists and engineers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The county has one of the highest number of PhDs per capita and the 2011 median household income of $110,204 per year is the second highest among all the counties in the US. In per capita income, Los Alamos County ranks 1st in New Mexico and 7th in the United States, and has the second-lowest level of poverty in the United States, and the lowest level of child poverty. Other factors contributing to Los Alamos's high quality-of-life index were the access to affordable housing and short commuting times.
