House of Cards, but no need for any of the other seasons, the story is perfect once the mistress has her last cry and hits a car with a thud.

West Wing. It's basically what Bill Clinton's White House would've been if he wasn't a philandering sexual predator.

I have only seen "The West Wing", "House of Cards", and the pilot episode of "Designated Survivor".

I'd recommend "The West Wing" over "House of Cards" because the former is slightly more realistic in the sense that the characters on that show usually act like normal people and not like sociopaths or other deviants. It's also the more uplifting and optimistic of the two shows, even though there's certainly no lack of drama either.

"The West Wing" is of course known for its liberal bias and his idealization of Democrats, so I guess you need to get past that. At the very least they made sure not all Republicans are sumbags on that show. In the early shows, they had a string of likeable recurring characters who were Republicans (like Ainsley Hayes, the "Blonde Republican Sex Kitten".... or that naval officer who was played by Christian Slater for a couple of episodes). And in in the later seasons you had Senator Vinick, who basically was John McCain, but without any flaws whatsoever.

Armando Iannucci is great, but The Thick of It was better than Veep, as is usually the case with American adaptations of British shows. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a kitten for her age though. Grin

The first 2 seasons of The West Wing were great, if a bit too Sorkinish. The series could never again reach the heights it reached in Two Cathedrals, the season 2 finale. I can't listen to Brothers in Arms without seeing Bartlett and his rain-soaked entourage walking to the press conference.

The West Wing (Seasons 1-4, 6-7) and Veep. Designated Survivor is crap.

House of Cards is like a drug, when you try it you get hooked. Personally I enjoyed it more than West Wing, but I certainly agree WW is probably a higher quality show.

I've only seen House of Cards and Veep, but I think both are fantastic. House of Cards has some shaky plausibility and lots of melodrama (especially later seasons), so it isn't as purely political as some on this forum might be looking for, but it's certainly entertaining, and there still is some good politics in the mix. Veep is hilarious, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus is amazing (as demonstrated by her multiple several awards for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the show). As you would probably expect, the politics here isn't what makes it good - the political aspect definitely takes a backseat to the humor and the plot in general is meh. But it's just extremely funny, possibly the funniest show I've ever seen.

Long story short, I'm looking forward to new seasons from both, so I would definitely recommend them. I can't really say which one is better because they are completely different, but if you looking for something a little more grounded in politics, House of Cards would likely be the way to go.

I used to love House of Cards but I just lost interest last season and I barely got through it. I got half way through the latest season but I just couldn't keep watching I just have lost complete interest in the show. It just is getting to unrealistic for me. I could shrug off the implausibilities in the first three seasons but now it feels like the writers aren't even trying.

I'll add another, older candidate:  Picket Fences.

The show aired in the early 1990's.  It was set in a small town near Green Bay, where unlikely things kept happening, often resulting in a courtroom trial centering around a hot-button political issue.

The main characters were the town sheriff and his doctor wife.

Veep is hilarious, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus is amazing (as demonstrated by her multiple several awards for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the show).

Of the choices, that is why I would choose Veep. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is absolutely perfect in the show. To be honest, this scene (don't watch if you haven't seen Season 3 Episode 9) is one of he best. The end of the most recent season is hard to believe myself.

As for other recommendations, I like American Horror Story and Shameless, not to mention that The X-Files is going to return once again. I need more specificity for recommendations.

Earlier this year, I was partially hooked on "Designated Survivor".  Lot of drama in that show.  Also, if you are into police-based reality shows, I highly recommend "LivePD" on A&E.  Smiley
