Interesting. I really didnt mind Tsongas at all, she was pretty moderate. Although I think this is Safe D. While there are a few republican towns along the New Hampshire border and Fitchburg area, There are a lot of extremely liberal Metrowest towns plus Lawrence. Metrowest always turns out at a high rate since its a very wealthy and full of Harvard and MIT grads. Dont think the GOP trend in the old mill towns can outweigh those so it will be between a moderate dem and a bold progressive. id rate the primary as leans moderate though

This district is Clinton 58-35, Obama '12 57-41, Obama '08 59-39. Utterly Safe D.

My first reaction when I read the title was "didn't he die 20 years ago?" Whoops. Anywas, Safe D.

Maybe one of their kids could run. Keep it in the family.

Just looking at the local reps to the General Court, Randy Mom (an immigrant and refugee from the Khmer Rouge), Diana DiZoglio and Jonathan Zlotnik could all be formidable candidates.

https://www.google.com/amp/www.bostonherald.com/news/local_politics/2017/08/buzz_builds_over_potential_candidates_to_fill_niki_tsongas_seat%3famp

Boston Herald name drops some potential candidates for the seat. Open congressional seats seem pretty rare in Massachusetts, so I expect a large primary. GOP may get someone credible, but I still think Dem primary will decide the next Rep from this district. I'm pretty surprised Tsongas is retiring, there's was little indication she was considering leaving. But I wish her a happy retirement, her and her husband represented MA well.

Dan Koh, Steve Kerrigan, and Ellen Meehan all appear to be the leading candidates. Meehan and Kerrigan appear to have ties to Tsongas, while Koh's victory would indicate growing influence for Marty Walsh.

Nikki Tsongas has always kind of been a nobody in Congress anyway.   It's not much of a loss for her to retire.

She lives in Medford, which is in MA-5 and pretty far from this district. Doesn't necessarily preclude a run but seems very unlikely.

Finally, something vaguely interesting happens in Massachusetts politics! I have no idea who runs though. Obviously Safe D though.

Only time Mass congressional elections would get interesting is if MA-9 was an open seat but even thats a stretch with New Bedford and part of Fall River in the district

Really hoping we can get a more liberal democrat in there. Nikki Tsongas was never my least favorite MA Dem but I don't find her to be a particularly good congresswoman.

If she's not liberal enough for you, you'd have really hated her late husband.

I understand it's Massachusetts, but it's not a D+30 district...

So? It's not like a Republican can win there. What matters is how liberal the Democratic primary voters are.
