2017: Les Republicains, wholeheartedly.
2012: Sarkozy, a Union for a Popular Movement (both rounds)
2007: Sarkozy, a Union for a Popular Movement (both rounds)

2002: Madelin, Liberal Democracy (1st Round); Chirac, Rally for the Republic (2nd Round)
1995: Villiers, Movement for France (1st Round); Jospin, Socialist Party(2nd Round)
1988: Mitterand, Socialist Party (both rounds)
1981: Debré, Gaullist Miscellaneous Right (1st Round); Mitterand, Socialist Party (2nd Round)
1974: Chaban-Delmas, Union of Democrats for the Republic (1st Round); Mitterand, Socialist Party (2nd Round)
1969: Poher, Democratic Centre (both rounds)
1965: Gaulle, Union for a New Republic (both rounds) (Reluctantly)
1958: Gaulle, Union for a New Republic (both rounds) (Reluctantly)

I thought Spain was hard, but, boy, France took a while!

2007-2017: I clearly support UMP/Les Republicains. Not exactly a fan of Sarkozy but certainly a better fit for me then Hollande. I will say I like Manuel Valls a lot, so if he ever becomes PS leader in the future, I'd support him.

1995-2002: Madelin and Villers and their parties aren't perfect but much preferable to Chirac. However, I'd support Chirac the 2nd round in 2002.

1969-1988: I'm all over the map. Poher, Chaban-Delmas, Debre - all great men. Mitterand's positive view on the French Jewish Community certainly would've locked up my vote for him in the 2nd round of multiple elections. His even handed approach to the Middle East is x1000 better then VGE or Chirac's pro-arab world slants, so despite my clear opposition to the economic policies of Mitterand, I'd vote for him in multiple 2nd rounds and in both rounds of 1988.

1958-1965: Gaulle deserves respect, even if I disagreed with his foreign policy going into his latter years.

65 De Gaulle
69 Pompidou
74 Chaban-Delmas / Giscard*
81 Chirac, Garaud / Giscard*
88 Chirac**
95 Chirac
02 Chirac, Saint-Josse / Chirac
07  Nihous / Invalid
12  See Below

* With hesitation.
** Personal vote.

Updated with details ala Sunrise.

- De Gaulle was good, esp. in foreign affairs and needs no defense. Pompidou was the best candidate to continue that.
- Chaban-Delmas had some interesting ideas in handling post May-68 France and is preferable to the social liberal, ultra pro-European Giscard. He was not a bad President but my R2 74/81 votes are more anti-Mitterand than pro-Giscard.
- With hindsight, I might go Garaud since Chirac wasn't making it to the 2nd round anyways and no one knew what the EU would evolve into.
- Some of the Chirac votes are more about the person than about policy and I would have hesitated in a few elections - 1988/R1 2002. Given Chirac's 1st term was the lesser one, I MIGHT have considered an alternative.
- Since the 2007 field was horrible and the French Greens are really stupid, I'd protest with CPNT to troll them and fishing is fun.
- Royal is dumb, I hate Sarkozy for a variety of reason (NATO, Middle East affairs, strongman quasi-populism, handling of religious issues, anomosity with Chirac, etc.), and never trusted Hollande to be competent. Villepin would have gotten my vote if he ran but otherwise, France is screwed.

A lot of things changed since I posted in here. I was supporting Sarkozy (obviously lost), so that changes my preferences.

Will likely support PS in 2017's elections if Valls wins the primary; will back LR and Fillon if anyone else wins PS primary. 2nd round support would go to the Anti-LePen candidate.

2007: François Bayrou (UDF)/Nicolas Sarkozy (UMP)
2012: François Bayrou (MoDem)/François Hollande (PS)
