So I have a lot of stuff about Romney. Especially at the time in 2012, Obama seemed the better choice.

Expanding on why I dislike Romney, he always came off as a weasel, opportunist, and generally sketchy in a way that I can understand and accept in the private sector, but not in government. The tying the dog to the roof of a car thing didn't help, and also my environment at the time sort of contributed to my disliking him because I focused on the bad stuff - I was in a high school that was 85% female and 60% black so you can imagine how unpopular Romney and the GOP were, I mostly heard bad stuff about the Republicans that year. Todd Akin's comments were a big one I remember.

Another part of the reason I supported Obama was Obama. I was actually impressed with his performance in his first term. He wasn't nearly as bad as I expected him to be as President, I was definitely supportive of his foreign policy at the time (Bin Laden was a big deal) and I thought he handled the economy just as well as McCain would have. If I could have seen ahead into 2014-2015 I might not have supported his foreign policy as much, but at the time I thought he was good on that issue.

Another thing that put me off was the behavior of a lot of Romney supporters. I felt like the Republicans in 2012 started to embrace that sort of toxic behavior that eventually morphed into the alt-right and had been simmering since Palin was the VP nominee in 2008. I highly disapproved of the GOP exploitation of what I consider dog-whistle politics during the 2012 campaign, the message seemed to be more focused on division rather than unity. I'm not blaming Romney for it, I feel most of the blame there lies with others in the GOP who were so desperate to win they'd embrace any group, no matter how bad.

That said, I definitely would have supported Romney over Trump or Clinton in 2016.

Time for a new list, no huge changes though Tongue

1900: McKinley
1904: Roosevelt
1908: Taft
1912: Taft
1916: Hughes
1920: Harding
1924: Coolidge
1928: Hoover
1932: Hoover
1936: Landon
1940: Wilkie
1944: Dewey
1948: Dewey
1952: Eisenhower
1956: Eisenhower
1960: Nixon
1964: Johnson
1968: Nixon

1972: Nixon
1976: Ford
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush

1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
2012: Romney

2016: Clinton (McMullin if in Utah)

Least sure about my vote in 1912 (might consider Teddy), 1964 (maybe Goldwater) and 2016 (maybe Johnson). I guess I would have had minor doubts in 1932, 1940, 1944, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2008 but I'm pretty sure I'd have voted Republican in those elections too.

1996: Bill Clinton
2000: Ralph Nader
2004: John F. Kerry
2008: Barack Obama
2012: Barack Obama
2016: Donald J. Trump

I'm not 100% sure this is what i would have done, but i assume i would have been a loyal voter for the Socialist Party, despite Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt being good candidates. I'm not sure whether i would have been convinced to vote for Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932 already. It would have depended on the exact nature of the campaign and what my life would have been exactly.

In 1968, i could have voted for Nixon. I think i would be an anti-Vietnam war activist, and Nixon was pretty moderate, even quite liberal for a Republican (i assume?). Of course i'm not a big fan of what he has done later on (Watergate Scandal), but back than i might've gone for Nixon.

Not a big fan of Mondale, but 1984 would have been an anti-Reagan vote.

In 1992 and 1996 i could have went for Perot but I don't know. It would have depended on whether i would've liked Bill Clinton back than. Now i obviously don't, but back than that might've been different. And i could have went for Perot as a third party protest vote (dissatisfied with the two-party system). But i'm not sure about that.

In 2000 i'm also not 100% sure whether i would have went for Nader or Al Gore, but if his name recognition was high enough for me, i probably would have went for Nader, and at this stage right now (if i had to vote for 2000 American presidential elections tomorrow, i would have went for Nader), even if i lived in Florida. (assuming i wouldn't have known the result, and even than, it wouldn't have made a difference)

I'm not a (big) fan of Donald Trump as well, but I remember well that i did prefer Trump over Clinton during the crucial stage of the 2016 election, but it might have depended on the state i'd live in. I think I probably would have voted for Trump, assuming that Trump wouldn't have won, and assuming he would have been a different president than he is now (at one point, he said that he was going to be a president for the working class), while his policies on trade and foreign policies were also issues that mattered to me, while i was very angry with the Democratic establishment (for rigging their primaries), and the media environment of 2016 (which was all biased towards Clinton, both during the primaries and the generals). My opinion on Trump still changes basically every day, but he has something no other Republican has. I know Trump is morally not the person who's best fit to be a president, and that he doesn't have the temperament, and i might regret "supporting" him now, as he turned out to be more conservative than i assumed, but back on election day, i remember that i was stunned, amazed and happy with the election result. Clinton and the Democratic establishment seemed to be very arrogant during the campaign, and *everyone* had to be in favour of her, because she was a woman or because the opponent was terrible, and that basically pushed me towards Trump. Also, i hate political dynasties and the fact that the election looked to be like it was going to be Jeb Bush against Hillary Clinton for a long time, has pushed me towards an outsider.

Richard Nixonin 1960, because I'm not the biggest fan of JFK and didn't like that he wanted to cut taxes and wasn't too found of his foreign policy and I would not have been a fan of selecting LBJ as his running mate without hindsight but I'm not a fan of Nixon either and wouldn't have been convinced he'd cooperate with a left leaning, or Gerald Ford in 1976, because I don't really mind Ford and liked his position on campaign finance reform, but being in the same party as Watergate and his dumping of Rockfeller for someone more conservative, I would have gone for Carter in the end. The most likely perceived scenario that could have gotten me to vote Republican was 2000 if McCain had gotten the GOP nomination and he was up against someone who I didn't like on the Dem side (say had Bob Kerrey had been the nominee). I may have voted GOP if Rockfeller had gotten the nomination in 1968 against someone like Scoop Jackson (who of course did not run) and likely would have had he gotten the nomination in 1960 against JFK.

You don’t like Reagan?

I don't. I would have found Reagan very frightening in 1980, and Carter at least was good on the foreign policy front, and in general, like Mondale as a whole. Now to be fair, there are aspects of Reagan that I prefer to today; I think he was more of a genuine conservative, and not blindly backed by corporate interests like I'd say, and he was willing to work with more conservative factions of the other party. Just to be clear, I'm not a full on socialist and am fairly moderate on social issues but I do tend to agree with left factions of my party on many economic issues (healthcare, education, unions, regulation of banks, credit cards, payday loans, and industries like that) of which Reagan is no match for, considering his tax policies that freed up too much capital to the wealthy and his firing of striking air traffic controllers.
