No. It will be hard enough for him to win reelection. It's easier to win election to a gubernatorial office than a federal office (senate) when your party is not the major party of the state.

He could, but it would be a big gamble. The Senate race would be much more nationalized, and his approval ratings (if they remain relatively high) wouldn't help him as much. He'd have a harder time overperforming the Democratic ticket by a lot than if he ran for re-election.

I thought the NC Democrats already had a good recruit in Jeff Jackson?

Could he?

Yeah, but I think he'd be more useful in his current position. Rather than having him run for an office he's less likely to win and opening the potential for the Governor's mansion to be taken by a Republican who won't act as a check on the state legislature.

I think I'd rather have a decently high chance of keeping NC-Gov and a lower chance of not taking back the Senate seat than a medium chance of losing both.

He certainly could run, and he'd probably pick the seat up if Tillis retired, but it comes at the risk of losing the Governor's mansion, and I'm not sure I want that as a Democrat, with North Carolina Republicans showing they don't care about democracy.

He'll probably run or reelection. Besides, Democrats have a surprisingly good bench in NC already.

Speculated, but I think if the political environment is looking favorable for Dems, he'll definitely jump in.

From what I can tell, he's pretty interested in flipping the statehouse so he can actually govern. There was a good piece of politico longform on it a month ago or so.

Doubtful, he could have run for Senate in 2008 and probably gotten backing over Hagan but chose to stay in NC.

No, he barely won against an idiot in 2016, pair him up against literally any republican that is not a train wreck, and you have a huge uphill battle for Cooper.

No. Between Heath Shuler, Anthony Foxx, Charles Meeker, Josh Stein, Linda Coleman, Cate Edwards, and Janet Cowell, I'd say that there are plenty of potential recruits.

He could run in 2022, especially if he wins a second gubernatorial term. Richard Burr said this will be his last term.

I think it would be easier for Cooper to win reelection, and I imagine that's what he will try to do. I think Democrats will try to get Anthony Foxx to run against Tillis, he's young and has a good resume and would be a strong candidate.

He was running against an incumbent who was literally coming off of great publicity for his handling of the hurricane. Also, blacks underperformed their projected slice of the electorate by four points. And of course, HRC. If he wasn't facing those headwins, Cooper probably would've won by more like 5.

If McCrory had not chosen to die on the lgbtwhateverelseyouwannaaddtoit hill, and not turned off moderates im the suburbs, he would have won by 3 or 4.

This stopped HRC from flipping the state and getting Trump's Michigan margins.

I knew Hillary lost NC right when I heard election and political officials started messing with the early voting in black areas. Till then, I had it in her column.

I don't think Cooper would be the one with an uphill battle in this race, tbh. Tillis (who is quite unpopular) has zero room for error in a presidential year, and NC is more Democratic down-ballot. I don't think hell run for Senate though, he's basically a lock for reelection as governor.

I'd rather he run for reelection, see to Democrats winning the Lt Gov office as well, and that way he could challenge Burr in 2022. If he loses, he just continues serving as Governor. If he wins, hopefully a Democrat takes over. Other than that, I say it's better he held the Govs office here and keep a check on the legislature. It's not common that an incumbent Governor is knocked off in North Carolina (Cooper was the first in a long, long time iirc), so the last thing Democrats should want is to give Republicans another shot at winning unified control in NC. There might not be another bathroom bill-type incident to weaken the Republican candidate.

TBH, we don't need Cooper.

Foxx and Jackson are both A-list recruits, and Tillis has repeatedly shown disinterest in running again. And Virginia's definitely right. It'd be better for Cooper to run for re-election and give it a go against Burr in 2022. Though it's my understanding Cooper pissed off NC's LGBT population for not doing enough about HB2.

He won't, He's going to have a tough enough challenge holding the Governorship with how rabidly the NCGOP is going to go after him, Senate would be even worse.

Anyone else get the feeling that Jackson has the potential to become President in like 2032? He's very young, a veteran, from a swing state, handsome, and seems like an authentically good person. If he wins 2020, I see him having no path but up.
