In the midst of the current violent situation in Charlottesville, VA, I'm wondering if Trump's reaction to this will affect the loyalty of the Alt-Right to him in his reelection bid.

Sadly, he will keep most of his "Alt-Right" White Nationalist support. Some of them may abstain/undervote or vote other third parties for President.

People like Richard Spencer have already endorsed Gabbard, if she's the nominee, it's possible she takes a good amount of the alt-right vote.

No she won't.  The alt-right hates the idea of a non-white person having any power in a majority white country.

I think the Democratic nominee will probably be a woman or a minority, so I don't see them jumping Trump's ship anytime soon.

I certainly hope they don't jump ship and vote for Democrats -I mean what self-respecting Democrats these days want their support? They should stay with the GOP -they're meant for each other.

Yes. No matter what he says they'll be convinced he's on their side. Any vague statement to the contrary is actually just the 4th Dimensional Chess Master Trump at work.

Can you really divorce the alt-Right from GOP mainstream at this point?

Of course. Trump has proven that he won't take a definite stand against them, because he knows they're a part of his base, no matter how small a portion they may make up of it.

Where in god's name would they go? These people are delusional, no matter what Trump says they'll convince themselves he's just lying for political expediency, and that somehow that's okay because he's on their side. A number of atheists I knew in 2008 and 2012 somehow managed to convince themselves that Obama was secretly an atheist and based their vote for him on that.

Yes, Trump is so obviously dog-whistling for the alt-right. The best part is, he thinks no one can see it!

Uh, yes? These people are single-issue immigration voters and Trump is largely following through on that.

Really? Other than the GOP members of Congress, all polls suggest that actual GOP voters essentially in line with Trump presidency and platform.

I'd say yes, they have nowhere else to go.

Over the next 3 and a half years, it's possible that Trump falls out of favor with the alt-right and some glory-seeking guy like Spencer runs a futile campaign to get attention and legitimize the alt-right. I guess that sounds a little silly.

Probably, but the alt-right is at most 1% of the country so it's not all that important.

Yes, obviously.  Who are they going to vote for?  The Dems?  LOL.  Even if the Dems went back to their position on immigration from 10 years ago, most of the Alt-Right would still vote R.

Now turnout is a different question.  But in regards to that- what TJ said.  They aren't a large enough demographic to swing any state.
