What if the 1968 election was thrown to the house? The Democrats did control the majority of State Delegations, but a lot of those delegations were from Southern Delegations who were not very fond of Humphrey, so it's not a sure thing that they would elect Humphrey. Who does the house select?

I feel as if the Confederate states would vote for Wallace, the north states and some west states would vote for Humphrey and he could win that way. After all, we just came off of the biggest popular vote landslide four years prior. I feel as if Nixon would only really get his home state and some of the middle down states.

Maybe Nixon/Muskie is the compromise ticket selected .

Wallace would never be able to secure the support of House delegations from outside the South. He can, however, play kingmaker.

The southern democrats definitely don't like Humphrey, so the most likely outcome is that Nixon sells his soul to the devil to get elected.

I just had a thought. If the southern delegations voted for Wallace rather then Nixon or Humphrey, leading to no candidate having a majority of delegations, who becomes President? Is it whoever has a plurality of delegations?

Humphrey probably barely ekes it out after some hard-ball from LBJ, who'd still be obligated to do so for the sake of The Great Society.

No it goes into deadlock until one candidate gets a majority. So if the Senate confirms a vice President, the Vice President becomes acting president. If no VP is confirmed, Speaker becomes Acting President.

Acting President Muskie if the southern delegations break for Wallace, President Humphrey and Vice President Muskie if they back their own ticket.

LBJ will whip the Southern delegations behind Humphrey. Remember during the primary HHH was their choice and Republicanism was still a dirty word to Old Bulls.
