Ok so I have tried to put myself in the place of someone who is not like me (gay, Jewish, progressive Democrat living in NYC) to imagine who the Trump of the left could be. I really can't imagine someone who presents so caustically and recklessly and would have the same success in the Democratic primaries. Who do you think could fit this mold?

Hillary Clinton. A very controversial figure with a hard core of strong supporters.

Neither Hillary nor Bernie come remotely close to Trump. I really think Figueira is right. There's no equivalence.

I've thought about this before, and I don't see it happening unless a significant amount of the Trump demographic defects to the Democrats. The Democratic base just seems to prefer conventional candidates too much. Even Bernie Sanders, who I equate more to Ted Cruz than Trump, couldn't make it through the primary.

Bernie Sanders followers acted more like Trump then any other candidate. The base of the party is sick of all the disgusting heckling coming from the bros. Bernie, like Trump, is slowed to call out his toxic followers behavior, plunging into deeper division the Democratic party has never seen in modern times. If anyone deserves blame for this disastrous election Bernie would be placed at the top, causing Trump to prevail over the most qualified candidate.

Kanye West.

- Says outlandish things
- Would get support from Democrats/liberals/progressives with some of his stances
- Has no political experience

Except that he said he would run as a Republican.

So he would be a Trump, just not the Left's Trump.

Republicans won't vote for him. If he has leftist populist views, he could possibly make it far in a Democratic primar.

Democrats don't toil in ignorance, conspiracy theories, and unabashed racism/misogyny. There is no equivalence.

Geoffrey Fieger? Jerry White? Coleman Young?

There are leftists that are just as ridiculous and irresponsible as Trump, they just don't get as far.

A Vox article written before the election described Sean Penn as the left's Trump - brash, history of clashing with reporters, lots of political commentaries with especially strong rebuke of the opposing party's president, no prior office, dark personal life, etc.

No one comes close.

If by "Trump" you mean someone who is a political outsider, who has little establishment support and holds views contrary to party orthodoxy... hmm.. maybe Gabbard?  Sanders?  Neither are really "outsiders" though, at least not to the degree Trump was.

If by "Trump" you mean a TV celebrity that loves tweeting, has a tendency towards inflammatory comments and loves getting in social media wars with various celebrities and the media... can't think of anyone at the moment.  Doesn't mean a figure can't emerge though.
