Since this question has popped up in this forum several times, I thought I'd eventually make a poll about it...

Looking at the poll I can only think of: Really? Shocked

It makes much more sense that these people voted Trump. It's still a mystery why they supported Obama twice. If Obama had run for a third consecutive time, most of those county would still have gone Republican.

In my mind, "Obama Republican" sounds more like Obama '08/Romney '12 voter.

Are the red counties McCain/Romney/Hillary counties or [McCain or Romney]/Hillary counties?

Depends on the individual. I don't see why we need to inaccurately name them in a blanket statement like that.

As i said in another thread - i have an example of such voter (cousin) in my family. AFAIK - he almost always voted Democratic before 2016. So, "Trump Democrat" is better description of him. It seems, that a now proverbial "story" of "little, forgotten, white ethnic Democrat, mad at party's embrace of minorities (and feeling, that minorities are the only one's, whom party is interested in, and whom it "sold it's soul")" describes him almost completely, though he doesn't belong to "White working class" (being retired middle-rank scientist)....

I belong to the minority that believes that Obama attracted many Republicans. They just switched back when they had the possibility of voting Trump. It's clear why those people supported Trump, but it's still a bit of a mystery why they supported Obama.

I didn't make the map, but I believe red means Romney/Clinton counties and blue depicts Obama-'12/Trump counties. Early County, Georgia, e.g., voted McCain/Obama/Trump, thus I think the map maker didn't have the 2008 election in mind.
