1860 Census: Maine: 628k people.

...Yeah, I'm going to have to see some proof that over 1% of Mainers hiked a thousand miles south to enlist in the CSA Army.

LePage is a walking argument in favor of runoffs.

Or better yet, ranked choice voting, which Maine passed in '16 and will first use in '18 (assuming the courts don't shut it down, which seems fairly likely given their past statements on the issue).

He's brash and populist and has tremendous support inland. He's French so no doubt that helps him in the North, and he's had a relatively successful term as governor with things such as welfare reform

State Supreme Court struck it down. May only be used for primaries and local offices.

I'm almost certain that the Maine Supreme Court simply issued an advisory opinion that it's unconstitutional, without actually striking it down. See: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/23/us/maine-ranked-choice-elections-voting.html?mcubz=3 and https://www.boston.com/news/politics/2017/07/16/ranked-choice-voting-stays-alive-in-maine-for-now

But yeah, that seems likely to happen soon enough
