In 1968 and especially in 1972, Nixon did pretty well in the South. Ford for example had a mixed performance in 1976. But in all fairness, he was up against a southerner. What do you think, how well could Nelson Rockefeller have done in the South? Although I strongly believe he would have won the 1968 election, I'd say he's not a good fit for the region as liberal Republican from New York who was strongly pro civil-rights. The question is very intersting in a possible two-way race against a northern liberal Democrat of the time like Hubert Humphrey and Bobby Kennedy. However, I believe Rocky could have won states such as Florida, Virginia, Texas, Tennessee and North Carolina both in a head-to-head match-up as well as in a three-way race with George Wallace or Lester Maddox. Even Arkansas may have been possible (his brother Winthrop was a two-term governor of that state).
