What's the source?

If that's true, then there's some truth to the notion that it's a more Republican district on the downballot level. I'll still call it Tilt D though, since it's a Trump midterm and the trend is toward the Democrats.
Well bill Bryant who ran this time for governor won the 8th by 5 points if I remember correctly while rob McKenna who ran last time lost by 3 won the 8th by 13 points.

I would call it a toss up tilting republican hold the dems have no bench in the 8th at all while the GOP has the tons of candidates to choose from.

Per DKE, Mallot's not running, but State House Majority Leader Pat Sullivan and a ex-state representative Chris Hurst are both considering and seem like they could be strong candidates (especially Hurst).

The fact that both of these folks live in this district pretty much debunk the idea that the Democrats have a weak bench here.

It's all relatively. Among Republicans much greater number of names were mentioned. It's not TX-13, so Democrats have some bench, simply not that big...

Republicans are really banking on that "weak bench" line of attack here.

Which is funny because a shallow bench can be an advantage in the jungle system. 7 Rs vs 2 Ds could easily end up D vs D in the general.

Kim Schrier and Mona Das seem like strong candidates. Schrier in particular seems like a strong fit for the district, and she has a plethora of academic achievements, along with being a practicing pediatrician. She seems to really encapsulate the white suburban mom demographic that really took a hard turn leftwards in the 2016 election.

A glance at the WA general thread would reveal that there is indeed a good D bench. Wink
Mallot has 4 young daughters, so I see why he looks to be out.

Pat Sullivan would a good candidate. Hurst as well, but isn't he in 70s?

Hurst just has to hold it until redistricting though if he wins.

Hurst is born 1954. Sullivan is eight years younger

Both would be great, though I doubt the grassroots would get excited about Hurst

Sullivan is connected, but anonymous. Frank Chopp (the Speaker) has been around forever and casts a long shadow (think Mike Madigan or Shelly Silver, only not corrupt)

Hurst would be an amazing get, I didn't mention him before because I figured he was done with politics. The district he held basically encompasses all the Republican-leaning parts of WA-08 minus Chelan and Kittitas counties.

^ IIRC - Hurst is very moderate. Will "activists" support him?

WA-08 isn't really 'activist' territory.

Good that such territories still exist...

Everyone is either too rich and comfortable to care about activism or works a back-breaking low pay job which leaves them with no time or energy to care about activism.

So wonderful, It's the ideal society.

This seems like a district where running a generic Very Serious moderate would be a good idea.

I might not go quite that far, but it's definitely a district that would be less friendly to a Sanders-esque candidate than most in Washington.

Seattle has a pretty strong activist streak, but this district is more low-key suburban in nature.

Activists are people who want to make the world better than it currently is. It's good to know there are some areas where people realize everything is perfect already.

Activists are people who want "to make the world better" according to their own ideas about what the better world is, and without asking other people's  opinion on this subject. As a result - save me God from them, i will do everything else myself...

Rossi? Really? The perenial loser? Republicans would be smart to nominate someone fresh.
Rossi really you do realize he WON the governors race in 2004 right?
He won the first count and the second count but on third she narrowly won he tried to get 1 last count and the courts said no he is the rightful governor of Washington.

Oh not this $hit again.

Shaddup kid.
