Chris Christie runs for the Republican nomination in 2012, and wins the nomination by carrying New Hampshire, Florida, Michigan, The rest of New England and Northeast, Ohio and Virginia. He then selects Jon Huntsman as the first Mormon on a major party ticket (let alone a GOP ticket) to create strength in foreign policy.

Does the Christie/Huntsman ticket defeat President Obama?

Nah but he could possibly pick up Florida, Ohio, Iowa, and maybe New Hampshire. Colorado is a possibility but i don't know.

334: Chris Christie/John Huntsman Jr. - 50.5%
204: Barack Obama/Joe Biden - 44.8%

Minnesota, Iowa, New Mexico, New Jersey, and Oregon are the closest states.

329-209

This was during Christie's golden days, and if he stops campaigning to spend time in NJ during Sandy, he carries his state. But, Christie-Huntsman is too moderate, so the south is a bit friendlier to Obama due to the lack of conservative turnout.

I'm not sure how Obama loses New Jersey and wins North Carolina. Surely the home state effect isn't that exaggerated?

Christie was a very popular governor until Bridgegate hit, so New Jersey is at least considered a tossup.

I think Christie would have also won Michigan and New Jersey, giving him 364 EVs against 174 for Obama.

My map would be this minus New Jersey, New Hampshire and the addition of North Carolina and Florida
