1952: Dwight Eisenhower
1956: Adlai Stevenson
1960: John Kennedy

1964: Barry Goldwater
1968: Richard Nixon

1972: George McGovern
1976: Roger MacBride
1980: Ronald Reagan
1984: Ronald Reagan
1988: George H.W. Bush
1992: George H.W. Bush
1996: Bob Dole
2000: George W. Bush
2004: George W. Bush
2008: John McCain
2012: Mitt Romney

2016: Gary Johnson

That's without hindsight. Primaries is a hard question to answer, since it pretty strongly depends on when in the primary process. Ask me to pick between the main Republican candidates in 2016 and I'll say Rubio (especially without hindsight, but still), but I actually supported Cruz for most of the voting period and cast my vote for Kasich because of local circumstances. So, yeah, hard to say.

Just using the results for the past elections from isidewith.com as I agree with most of it. Percentages listed are how much my political opinion agrees with each candidate

2016: Clinton 82% vs. Trump 49%
2012: Obama 80% vs. Romney 46%
2008: Obama 79% vs. McCain 47%
2004: Kerry 82% vs. Bush 53%
2000: Gore 82% vs. Bush 52%
1996: Clinton 83% vs. Dole 45%
1992: Clinton 80% vs. Bush 48%
1988: Dukakis 78% vs. Bush 54%
1984: Mondale 76% vs. Reagan 49%
1980: Carter 80% vs. Reagan 50%
1976: Carter 74% vs. Ford 47%
1972: McGovern 75% vs. Nixon 48%
1968: Humphrey 75% vs. Nixon 49%
1964: Johnson 80% vs. Goldwater 49%
1960: Kennedy 84% vs. Nixon 38%
1956: Stevenson 67% vs. Eisenhower 59%
1952: Stevenson 70% vs. Eisenhower 59%

I probably would have voted for Eisenhower in 1956, but straight Democrat besides that.

Doing primaries only.

1952: Estes Kefauver (I really dislike his Tipper Gore-style crusades, but he was better than his opponents)
1956: Estes Kefauver
1960: Wayne Morse
1964: Lyndon Johnson
1968: Eugene McCarthy
1972: Ed Muskie
1976: Frank Church
1980: Abstain
1984:  Abstain
1988: Jesse Jackson (could be persuaded to vote for Gephardt or Simon though).
1992: Jerry Brown
1996: Abstain
2000: Bill Bradley
2004: What a weak field. Probably a protest vote for Dennis Kucinich. Maybe John Edwards without hindsight.
2008: Kucinich protest vote.
2012: Abstain
2016: Bernie Sanders (actually the best candidate initially was Martin O'Malley, but his campaign went nowhere).

Major candidates only, no Nader/McCarthy and whatever. Trying without hindsight. With hindsight, 1960 (maybe), 1968 (maybe), 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1996 would be different

Without hindsight -

1952 - Meh, Eisenhower I guess?
1956 - Probably Stevenson
1960 - All the way with JFK
1964 - All the way with LBJ
1968 - All the way with HHH
1972 - Four more years (oof)
1976 - Probably Ford
1980 - Reagan
1984 - Certainly Reagan
1988 - Certainly Bush
1992 - Probably Bush
1996 - Clinton
2000 - Probably Gore
2004 - Meh, Bush I guess? (OOF)
2008 - Probably Obama
2012 - Probably Obama
2016 - Trump

With hindsight, 1956, 1992 and 2004 would be different. 1972 I do not know, McGovern would have been bad and this whole scandal uncovered a lot of things wrong with the American political system.
