My state did not have primaries prior to 1976, so those years are general election only.
All later years are "primary; general" (except for 2008, in which Obama was my choice for both).
1952: Adlai Stevenson
1956: Adlai Stevenson
1960: John F. Kennedy
1964: Lyndon B. Johnson
1968: Fred Halstead (Socialist Workers)
1972: George McGovern
1976: Mo Udall; Eugene McCarthy (Independent)
1980: Ted Kennedy; Barry Commoner (Citizens)
1984: Jesse Jackson; Mel Mason (Socialist Workers)
1988: Jesse Jackson; Lenora Fulani (New Alliance)
1992: Uncommitted; Lenora Fulani (New Alliance)
1996: Uncommitted; Ralph Nader
2000: Uncommitted; Ralph Nader
2004: Dennis Kucinich; Ralph Nader (Independent)
2008: Barack Obama
2012: Barack Obama; Jill Stein
2016: Bernie Sanders; Jill Stein
2020: Bernie Sanders; Howie Hawkins (barring a miraculous resurgence of Bernie's campaign)

Major candidates only, no Nader/McCarthy and whatever. Trying without hindsight. With hindsight, 1960 (maybe), 1968 (maybe), 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1996 would be different

1952: Eisenhower
1956: Stevenson
1960: JFK
1964: LBJ

1968: Nixon
1972: McGovern
1976: Carter

1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: HW Bush

1992: Perot
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry
2008: Obama
2012: Obama

2016: Trump
2020: Sanders

1952: Eisenhower D primary Kefauver
1956: Stevenson D primary Kefauver
1960: JFK D primary: Humphrey
1964: LBJ R primary: Rockefeller
1968: Humphrey D primary: RFK -> McCarthy
1972: McGovern D primary McGovern or Muskie
1976: McCarthy D primary Church
1980: Reagan? D primary Kennedy
1984: Reagan? D primary Jackson
1988: Dukakis? D primary Jackson
1992: Perot D primary McCarthy -> Harkin
1996: Perot
2000: Gore D primary Bradley
2004: Kerry D primary Kucinich -> Dean
2008: Obama D primary Clinton -> Obama
2012: Obama R primary Romney
2016: Trump D primary: Bernie Sanders R primary: Kasich
2020: Biden D primary: Bernie Sanders
2024: Biden or female VP D primary: Yang R primary: Hawley

2016 would surprisingly not have changed with or without hindsight. I would and still would very likely vote Trump. 2016 was a perfect storm. I still prefer Kasich and Sanders in the respective primaries.

2020 (primary and general) are the only actual votes here.

1952: Eisenhower
1956: Eisenhower

1960: Kennedy
1964: Johnson
1968: Humphrey
1972: McGovern
1976: Carter
1980: Carter
1984: Mondale

1988: Tossup, would probably eventually settle on Dukakis though
1992: Clinton (I might have briefly considered a Perot vote)
1996: Clinton
2000: Gore
2004: Kerry (Dean in primary)
2008: Obama (in primary and general)
2012: Obama
2016: Clinton (Sanders in primary)

2020, obviously, is Biden (Sanders in primary).

Primaries/General (if different)

1952: Kefauver/Eisenhower
1956: Kefauver/Eisenhower
1960: Kennedy
1964: Johnson
1968: Kennedy/Humphrey
1972: Chisholm/McGovern
1976: Brown/Carter
1980: Kennedy/Carter
1984: Jackson/Mondale
1988: Jackson/Dukakis
1992: Brown/Clinton

2000: Bradley/Gore
2004: Dean/Kerry
2008: Obama
2012: Obama
2016: Sanders/Clinton

Modern American history is a tapestry of quality, transformative Democratic leaders losing in the primaries.

My previous votes remain the same - all Republican until Clinton in 2016, except for LBJ over Goldwater in 1964 and possibly FDR in 1944 ... I go back and forth on that one ... but I have added a depressing "Abstain" for 2020.

Least enthusiastic vote for Clinton '96. Most... hard to say. Maybe Johnson '64?

My previous votes remain the same - all Republican until Clinton in 2016, except for LBJ over Goldwater in 1964 and possibly FDR in 1944 ... I go back and forth on that one ... but I have added a depressing "Abstain" for 2020.

You were willing to vote against Trump in 2016 but not 2020? Huh

I was indeed going to leave it blank or vote Libertarian, but I had absentee issues. Sad  Yeah, I'm a non-voter now!
