Without hindsight it may have looked something like this:
1952: Adlai Stevenson
1956: Dwight Eisenhower (this would have been a hard one, without hindsight, at the time I would have been a Democrat and Stevenson is one of my favorite Democratic nominees but Eisenhower deserved reelection)
1960: John F. Kennedy
1964: Lyndon Johnson

1968: Richard Nixon
1972: Richard Nixon

1976: Jimmy Carter
1980: Ronald Reagan
1984: Ronald Reagan
1988: George H. W. Bush
1992: George H. W. Bush
(this would have been a hard one without hindsight, because I would have probably have considered myself a Blue Dog Democrat but Bush was doing a good job and I've always really liked him, so I would have probably voted for his re-election)
1996: Bill Clinton
2000: George W. Bush
2004: George W. Bush
2008: John McCain
2012: Mitt Romney
2016: Donald Trump

With hindsight:
1952: Dwight Eisenhower
1956: Dwight Eisenhower
(at the time I would have been a Democrat and Stevenson is one of my favorite Democratic nominees but Eisenhower I think was one of our greatest presidents (he's definitely in the top 10 at least on my list, my favorite GOP president, along with Bush Sr)
1960: John F. Kennedy
1964: Lyndon Johnson
(with hindsight, this is a hard one because on the one hand I think Johnson was very bad for this country but on the other hand Goldwater was too libertarian for me and seemed too eager to use nuclear weapons)
1968: Richard Nixon (the country needed a change)
1972: Richard Nixon (McGovern was way too liberal)
1976: Jimmy Carter
1980: Jimmy Carter
(Carter is a hard one for 1976, in hindsight Ford would have been better for foreign policy but I would have agreed more with Carter on domestic policy so I'd probably still go with him, although I'm not sure, on the other hand with hindsight in 1980 obviously Carter, even though he wasn't doing the greatest job, Reaganomics have hurt this country and the GOP, although I personnally like Reagan, Bush was right to call out voodoo economics)
1984: Ronald Reagan (Mondale was way too liberal)
1988: George H. W. Bush
1992: George H. W. Bush
(with hindsight this one is easy, Bush was the last great statesman to be president (my other favorite GOP president) and he was the last one where the country wasn't really polarized), plus in 1996 we would have probably gotten a moderate Democrat as president who would have been better than those that have come since)
1996: Bill Clinton
2000: George W. Bush (with hindsight I think everyone running that year would have made a bad president, Gore would have probably been weak and ineffective, and McCain would have been a worse neo-con than the Bush administration, and Bradley was simply too liberal)
2004: George W. Bush (if comparing the job he did to what Kerry would have done, Kerry if it means avoiding Obama)
2008: John McCain
2012: Mitt Romney
(this one is very easy in hindsight)
2016: Donald Trump (Hillary would have been terrible and something had to change)

Actual votes:
2012: Mitt Romney
2016: Donald Trump

Primaries:
1972: Scoop Jackson
1976: Jimmy Carter
(with hindsight: Scoop Jackson)
1980: George H. W. Bush
1984: Fritz Hollings
1988: Dick Gephardt
1992: George H. W. Bush
1996: Bill Clinton (with hindsight, Pat Buchanan)
2000: George W. Bush
2004: Dick Gephardt
2008: Hillary Clinton
(a Democrat was going to win that year anyway so might as well support the better one, as 2008 Hillary was OK)
2012: Mitt Romney
2016: Donald Trump (I would have supported Jim Webb had he been able to compete in the primary)
