Good, maybe he will exercise his right to refuse an education based on this chilling experience.

Kids have been sitting through the Pledge of Allegiance for many years already.
This is not a new "thing."
When I was a child, I recall in almost every grade year, seeing/knowing children of the Jehovah’s Witnesses faith refusing to stand and recite.
What's the big deal now ?

The big deal is that the teacher physically attacked a student who sat for the Pledge of Allegiance. If they did that to a Jehovah's Witness, a huge lawsuit would be forthcoming.

Does anyone else find it weirdly statist to require children to recite a pledge to the country's flag every day? What is the goal?  It sounds like something out of Communist Russia, not the United States.

These children aren't going in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee.  None of them are going to commit treason.  No need to require their allegiance.

It's better to teach them American history and civics every day.

This. Pressuring young children to recite a loyalty oath, especially one written by a socialist, is unsettling.

from Wikipedia:

"The recital was accompanied with a salute to the flag known as the Bellamy salute, described in detail by Bellamy. During World War II, the salute was replaced with a hand-over-heart gesture because the original form involved stretching the arm out towards the flag in a manner that resembled the later Nazi salute. (For a history of the pledge, see Pledge of Allegiance).

In 1954, in response to the perceived threat of secular Communism, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge that is recited today.[5]"

History is so funny.  A Christian socialist pushed for the Pledge to be said in schools, and then the Congress adds "Under God" to oppose secular communism.

I received a lot of criticism, not from my teachers, but from fellow students when I was in school and refused to perform the pledge of allegiance. Something about reciting a pledge to a flag every day struck me as disturbing, even as a kid. Personally, I think the pledge should be scrapped altogether, but at the very least people should be able to opt-out without being physically or verbally threatened, intimidated, or assaulted. So, seeing this happen to this kid is pretty bothersome to me and I hope whoever laid their hands on that student will be terminated from their teaching position.

I don't believe this was necessarily racist, although I could certainly be wrong. Either way, suburbanites are anything but the tolerant, accepting, multicultural folks that some people love to believe. In Virginia, for example, the pro-Confederate candidate received plenty of support in the suburban areas, just as Trump did across America. Suburban Whites are no less bigoted than rural Whites.

Recite the pledge or stay home.

Since the 1940''s the United States Supreme court has been held that this student's behavior is protected speech. The case name is West Virginia vr Barnett if you want to read it. Of my awareness there have been no challenges to this ruling in recent history, and given the alloting of the 60's protections to students in cases such as Tinker vs Des Meoines, it is unlikely that even if all the judical liberals on the current court were resigned or dead and replaced by Trump I don't think this is getting overturned.

They're children, not adults.  The whole reason society makes them go to school is to educate them and instill the values of the society... This is no different.  Love of country doesn't just appear out of nowhere,, it's not magical.  It takes hard work and instilling it in future generations.

Trump-Obama voters had more negative attitudes towards black people, Muslims, and immigration than Romney-Clinton voters.

Shunning children who choose not to recite the pledge does nothing to instill the values of our society in those children. Quite the contrary, actually.

Yes, but the pledge of allegiance doesn't instill love for country in anyone.

I'm glad I teach at a school where students aren't expected to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It's kind of pointless, if you ask me, and someone who's going to assault a student for not wanting to participate has no business being in the educational field. Even if you think the pledge is important (lol), what message does it send if you need to harass students who don't want to recite it?

Every place where actual facism has taken root, it's always come with support from suburbs.
