If LaFollette is (Sr) I don't think he was ever elected to Congress as a Progressive.

jimrtex- when did Claude Pepper serve in the Senate? I thought he served in the House like forever.

He was elected to the Senate in a special election in 1936.

Interestingly, on September 14, 2004, the Senate unveiled portraits of 2 outstanding senators in the Senate Reception Room, joining those of 5 others that were placed their in 1959: (Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, Robert M. La Follette, Sr., and Robert A. Taft)

Pepper's bio

Born in 1900, he was elected to the US Senate in 1936 in a special election, and then was elected to full terms in 1938 and 1944.  He was defeated by George Smathers in the 1950 primary, and lost in a primary for the other senate seat in 1958.  He was first elected to the House in 1962, and served until his death in 1989.  His reputation for longevity is probably based in part that his total service spanned 53 years, including a 12 year break.

You know, you just learn so much good stuff on this forum! Claude Pepper was defeated for Senate re-election the year I was born. Gee, no wonder I only thought of him as a Representative! Thanks for all the info.
Given that he was elected to the House from Miami, I'd always thought he was a transplanted northerner.  He was born in Alabama in 1900, and eventually after teaching law at the UoArkansas moved to Perry, Florida to practice law.  Perry is in the panhandle which has a redneck reputation.  He was elected to the Florida House from Perry (around 1930).  He moved to Tallahassee and held some statewide positions before being elected to the Senate.  After his defeat for the Senate, he return to practice law, including Miami and Coral Gables.

In 1900, when he was born, Dade County had less than 5000 people, and included the 3 counties to the North, and this was 6 times the population of 1890.  By 1990 the population was over 4 million, and is now over 5 million.
