How is Stein remotely electable? She has never held a crucial government office and is disliked by swaths of the Democratic Party, not to mention that she's too liberal to win over any moderate Republicans or independents.

Moderate, young-ish, charismatic, upbeat Southern Dem who still has some populist street cred and seems sincere. Basically Bill Clinton in 1992.

Stop worrying about who's electable and start worrying about who's worthy of election and the Democratic party will move in a better direction.

The ideal candidate as I imagine would be:

White man between 50 and 65, about 6ft 4in tall, two-term governor of a large state, previous experience in the House and/or the State Legislature, charismatic and very good speaker. Compassionate family man, but image of a tough guy when it comes to dealing with opponents and foreign advisories. And somebody who drives Trump crazy and lets him look like a fool when he tries to attack the candidate. However, candidate has to have a good sense of humor of course and, despite having a wide knowledge on all major issues, not the image of a technocrat.

Socially liberal, moderate on guns, focuses on balancing budgets and making government more efficient. Supports green energy, but doesn't want to shut coal immediately down and offers training programs to coal workers to find new jobs. Supports a higher minimum wage and single-payer healthcare. Also focusses on campaign finance reform (maybe something done as governor already). Moderate pro-free trade, supports a 15$ minimum wage and pro-choice.

$15 minimum wage and single payer are toxic to the american electorate.

Bernie obviously but he might be too old now.If he's not running, safest bet is probably someone like Al Franken, he would demolish trump in debates and he's personable and funny. Ideally either of them would pick a black or Hispanic VP.

Martin Luther King III/Richard Trumka would be a strong ticket.
Oh, I forgot how good Trumka is.

Trumka/Zizek could probably put Indiana in play.

I think Trumka could be a perfect fit for a "Democratic Trump".

Hey, I heard you like moderately socially liberal, fiscally moderately conservative former governors who are policy driven but not technocratic.

Sanders is the candidate most possible of producing a landslide victory. If Sanders could sweep the first Democratic primaries and be de facto nominee by March I could see him racking up 75 million votes and about 400  / about 58% in a two way race vrs. Trump.. He has a chance to shave 15pts off of Trump's white uneducated vote. He would keep 90-98% of Clinton voters whether they like it or not is beside the point. Third peg of the stool is if youth turnout and margin (Clinton only won voters under 35years by 56-39%, and a 37-37% tie among white under 35-s), the perfect constallation there sees under-35years turnout go up 10pts and Bernie getting 63-67% of that vote. With a little quick math here in the two-way race actually puts him around 60-61% of the vote.

In a situation where there are two right wing candidates on the ballot, not just Sanders but any Democrat who can get 53% of the vote has a chance to at minimum even if not running a good campaign win akin to Reagan 1980 level. With a good campaign and major shift in composition of the electorate one can get to dreaming about a 30point victory as the Democrats were with Carter in the middle summer 1976.  Carter almost lost that election lol.

Bernie just doesn’t do well enough with people of color to run on a national ticket.
