I mean, there are clear negative effects of binge drinking, and I say that as a proud binge drinker. No use being intellectually dishonest, whatever one's stance on the issue, by pretending all one's opponents are hysterical do-gooders.

It's never ended well for me.

It never ended well for me either. Binge drank on the night of Hurricane Irma and fell asleep on the bathroom floor after vomiting into the toilet for who knows how long (Crown and me don't get along), then awoke to the power out and had to drag myself to bed and sleep it off while my dumpy old home was shaking from the wind. It still beats my 21st birthday in Orlando though...

Binge drinking is extremely irresponsible but I don't think there is a point having a moral panic about it, people who do it know the risks.

Until the late 00s, most of Europe had a drinking age of 16. In 2007, Dubya's Surgeon General published a report on "binge drinking" and then Europe's attitudes towards alcohol started "Americanizing".

You have a strange concept of causality.

I can guarantee that any changes to alcohol laws in European countries was not because of some random ten year old American report.  It's not like the problems of excessive alcohol (which is different from what I see as binge drinking) aren't something new - look at the power of the temperance movement in parts of the UK in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for example.  I mean it's not like there's been a significant change to actual laws; plus certainly the drinking culture in a lot of areas in Europe is still pretty relaxed - Belgium was a world different to Scotland for example.

But I mean what do I know, it's not like I live here and have experienced drinking lots of alcohol in several countries.
