Under the Nazis, this guy refused to sign a forced declaration of abstaining from further political activity. This refusal got him send to a concentration camp where he went on hunger strikes and almost died. He had more stamina, backbone and integrity than all of these other guys combined. He was unbreakable.

Ironically, he was almost as stubborn in his anti-communism. So, exactly the same thing would probably have happened to him again had he lived in East Germany after the war.
