What would an electoral map of a U.S. election between them look like?
Which states would be the best fits for them as home states?

Schulz's home state could be Illinois, Ohio or Pennsylvania; a big left-leaning state with a steel and coal industry.
Merkel could live in Maine, the home of moderate Republican heroes, or in Alaska, whose population density is most similar to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's.

Assuming it's an open election. Merkel is Senate Leader and Schulz served as Ambassador to Germany. I'll also pick German running mates.

✓ Senator Angela Merkel (R-ME)/Governor Armin Laschet (R-OH): 275 EV. (49.71%)
Ambassador Martin Martin Schulz (D-PA)/Governor Manuela Schwesig (D-OR): 263 EV. (49.06%)

Home states:

Merkel: She comes from one of the poorest places in the former GDR (Meckelenburg-Vorpommern). So my guess is some poor state in the American South, as they are quite distinct and generally poorer than the rest of the US, just like former East Germany. Mississippi?

Schulz: He is from a large state in an industrial area, that isn't too badly off. (Nordrhein-Westphalen).  Pennsylvania? An industrial state (part of the Rust Belt) that is still more or less on the US average for how rich it is.

Election result:

Merkel wins a landslide just like she will in Germany. She is more or less a moderate while Schulz is probably too far left for the US.

President Angela Merkel (R-MS): 377 EVs (55%)

Ambassador to Germany Martin Schulz (D-PA): 161 EVs (43%)

President Angela Merkel (R-LA): Born into an academic Louisiana Creole family, Merkel, a Stanford-educated chemist, was Provost of Princeton University when she was plucked from obscurity in 1993 and appointed as Secretary of Energy in 1993 by recently re-elected President George H.W. Bush. She remained in office until Bush's defeat in his attempt for a third term by president in 1996. The following year, she was selected as Chair of the RNC, in which role she oversaw a number of notable midterm victories in 1998. She ran and won a senate seat in the 2000 special election, winning a full term in 2002. She declared her candidacy for President in 2004, and won re election.
