Heresy is considerably over the top, but Francis is sowing doctrinal confusion and seems unfazed by this. On paper his pronouncements (Amoris in particular) hew closely to established moral teaching, but there is an almost constant stream of alternative interpretations offered by his close associates that goes uncorrected. This papacy is also notable for the manner with which the current Pope and his associates treat their opponents; the stunning broadside against American Catholics published in La Civilta Cattolica exemplifies the latter, while as for the former one only need consider the Pope's implication that priests who prefer traditional clerical attire are somehow effeminate. It's confusing, particularly because while the message from the top is muddled the manner in which they deal with dissenters is anything but.

Nothing is confusing.
Since VaticanumII it's obvious, whether the corpus mysticum has still a spirit or has been dying.

I wonder if we're going to see one of those olden style coups, against Francis... lock him up, convene a conclave at the Vatican, and elect a new, more traditional Pope.

Francis isn't a conservative catholic. That's been obvious from the beginning. But his high approval ratings suggest the world doesn't want a conservative pope.

Theology isn't about popularity ratings.  If one accepts church tradition apart from scripture as a source of authority (I do not), then deviating from it very much is heresy, regardless of how popular those deviations are.  I can't say I know enough about Catholic dogma to say for sure if Francis has crossed that line or not, but he definitely seems to be trying to push at the limits.

Honestly the idea of accusing the head of a religion of spreading heresy is baffling to me.

It depends on what you mean by head and religion.

Well, I mean, Mormons accusing the LDS prophet of spreading heresy would be unthinkable. That's the kind of talk that gets a person excommunicated.

This isn't the first time this has happened in the Catholic Church. Pope John XII was the most recent case where a pope was accused of spreading heresy, recanted on his deathbed, and his successor declared what he had said was heretical. The idea that the pope is infallible also implies all of the previous popes were infallible too (when teaching in an official capacity). Practically every major controversy in Church history has had something like this at some point.
