Jewish Groups Worldwide Alarmed by Far-right AfD Breakthrough in German Election

http://www.haaretz.com/world-news/europe/1.813942

This headline does not make sense to me. Anyone looking at state election results since 2015 could see that something like this was coming.  So if there should be any alarm that should have been back in 2015.  The AfD result seems quite in line with the AfD state election results last couple of years.  Ditto various protests now by various Leftist groups over AfD results.  They should have seen this coming for last couple of years.

You got Bavaria? I want to see what that hyper turnout in Munich is pointing towards.

The AfD did drop a bit in 2017 (compared to their heights in 2016), but they already were surging the days before the election. I actually overestimated the AfD vote Tongue

Israeli media is... well, dumb when it comes to international elections. They're trumpeting this election as if the AfD just won 20% of the vote, they always do it whenever the far right slightly overperforms anywhere.

In retrospect it seems SPD should have formed a SPD-Green-Linke government in 2013.  The SPD fear of losing the middle ground if it forms an alliance with Linke was irrelevant since not forming such an alliance did not fetch it one Centrist vote relative to 2013.  It just lost votes to AfD, Greens, Linke, and FDP across the board.

But would it's members even have accepted it? And since the majority would have been rather small I'm sure a lot of centrist SPD/Greens lawmakers would have done anything to prevent it. The SPD probably is one of the most right-wing European social democratic parties.

I'm Jewish, and I recognize that the AFD was always going to get into government. I'm only really upset that CDU fell below 35%

Well, I, too, am upset about d**khead Gauland being in the position in which he is today, and there is no doubt about the fact that many Nazis have been crawling out of their holes to rejoice today, which is a bad thing. That said, Jewish left-wing groups' hysterical Pavlov always really only makes things worse, and not everyone in AfD is like Gauland (and they would have responded the same way under someone as inoffensive as Lucke anyway).

The Bavarian state site is pointless, because it has not more information than the Bundeswahlleiter.

München is here

Are they also upset about opening the borders to people from the most antisemitic region in the world?

Thanks! Looks like that 80%+ turnout really didn't go in any other (nonAfD) direction. If it did, it was a green/FDP boost.

I was about post the same thing.  I really thought that the München turnout surge would help SPD but it was more about Greens and FDP.

Wow! The Bavarians are faster in every aspect of life. That's why they're economically more successful than the Berliners.

Going into another Grand Coalition was clearly an error on the part of both parties involved, as neither wished to make a gamble (i.e. the CDU had the numbers to tough out a minority, but that too went against norms). Will be interesting - in terms of longer term political culture - to see if there's a change in attitudes now.

CDU picks up the Goslar - Northeim - Osterode direct mandate, and the SPD get All-Lübbecke I. This doesn't matter due to the second vote, but like the earlier gain in Waldeck, they are interesting to follow.
