It's been 90 days since SCOTUS allowed Trump's travel ban to go into effect (partially), so some portions of the ban have now expired. Trump has now issued a new ban - the "old ban" restrictions will remain in effect until October 18th, but after the 18th, new restrictions will replace the old. The list of countries has been revised (see topic title), and the restrictions vary by country. More here:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/24/politics/trump-travel-restrictions/index.html?adkey=bn

SCOTUS may dismiss case because of the changes:

The ironic thing is, most Venezuelans who want to travel to the U.S. are probably supporters of the opposition...

From what I've read, the Venezuela ban is for the nation's leaders and their families.

The countries facing a total ban are all majority-Muslim, except North Korea which is in a class of its own. Unlike the previous ban, this one is indefinite, so it represents even a hardening of Trump's position.

"Muslim ban" was always a really stupid thing to call it anyway. It's a great example of one type of argument that people in law school are taught NOT to use.

What's going on with Chad and Sudan to merit the changes?

"We need 90 days to get a real plan together, by then we will know what we want to do and have a better procedure in place". How did that work out? We knew this was going to happen, 90 day travel bans put in place every 90 days or so. Don't think the Supreme Court will let this stand continuously though so Trumpanzee killing himself again.

Adding in NK and Venezuela do know justice aside from banning potential defectors. The risk of NK and Venezuelan terrorists sneaking in to do a WH Down scenario is very low. So this is only a PR move to make the ban look more "diverse" and less like a Muslim-only ban.

The NK addition has some merit, but it likely wouldn't be guaranteed to pass muster based on what I said above. Trump will say that it is security based and it really isn't. The only NKs to travel abroad are mostly top party officials or sports members and it is highly monitored and subject to revocation if they think you are trying to defect (see https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20131109041952AAtgJDC)

So this would do more damage in the sense that we won't be able to snag more NK defectors to gain key intel from them.

As long as Trump insists it is a Muslim ban I'll roll with it.

Ah yes, North Korean and Venezuelan terrorists.
Don't forget about those terrorists from Chad, they've been a real problem over the years.

It's only for the ones he has no business interest in/can't make money off of. Remember that with all of his decisions.

SCOTUS has cancelled the planned Oct. 10 Oral Argument and is asking for briefs on whether the case should be dismissed in light of the changes that have been made.

The problem is that calling it a "Muslim ban" opens one up to that very counter argument you just replied to. This is the sort of thing people in law school are told not to do, if you have a valid case but try to frame it with some sort of extreme semantical statement, if that can be ripped apart that's what the other side will do and your case is much weaker. It's not good to be arguing over whether this is a "Muslim ban" or not rather than whether it's an unjust banning of people from certain countries that exclude ones that Trump has special interests in. The latter argument is easier to win.

That is ridiculous. If he wants a travel ban, why not Saudi Arabia? Most of the 9/11 thugs came from Saudi Arabia and they're number one in the selling of terrorism and its horrible ideology. But I guess they're the "good terrorists".

The far cruder (and likelier TBH) reason is that Trump has business interests in Saudi Arabia. Of course, so do the Fossil Fuel interests that support his presidency.

Trump's foreign policy is about Donald Trump firstly and the Trump Organization secondly. On a similar note, the Russia stuff isn't even about trying to establish a concordat with Russia to rule the world together or whatever, or about aligning U.S. policy in a more Moscow-friendly direction: it's mostly about his business interests in Russia and the fact that he perceives Putin as a personal friend.

True, but Saudia Arabia was treated way too friendly by all American presidents, including President Obama. The entire western world needs to be much tougher on this regime, which is actually worse than Iran.

I know it's Buzzfeed, but this article actually explains pretty well why banning Chad is a terrible idea.
