Thanks nclib--- you're awesome!

Will update shortly based upon your data... can't believe I accidentally left Texas off the list, especially considering it is my wife's favorite ball club in the country.... "Hook 'em Horns" !!!!

SEC WEST

Texas A & M University:

College Station, Texas:

5,397 HRC (35.3% D), 8,483 Trump (55.4% R)             +20.1% R

So, although I was expecting Trump to have most likely won College Station, I was a bit surprised by both the margins, as well as the relatively low amount of votes cast within the City.

Decided to double-check the data and code in other precincts by municipality and city/rural/uninc to validate that there wasn't anything weird going on with precinct changes and the like....

So naturally needed to run the numbers for literally neighboring sister-city Bryan, since a ton of college students reside out there with off-campus housing and found the following....

Bryan, Texas:   5,017 HRC (56.4% D), 3,383 ( 38.0% R)            + 18.4% D

Still, it appears that there are significantly fewer college students in Bryan than in College Station (Although still quite a large number)...

Bryan also has a significantly higher proportion of "minority" residents--- (42% Anglo, 36% Latino, 18% Black) vs College Station (69% Anglo, 13% Latino, 9% Asian, 7% Black).

Also, took a look at what appeared to be significantly rural precincts, without tons of subdivisions and the like, and estimated some where around 11.5k voters were from rural areas (74% R- 20% D)....

We also have about 5k voters living in uninc precincts directly between College Station and Bryan that split roughly 50-50 of the two-party vote share....

I suspect that many students voted via absentee ballot in their home states and counties (As I did back in the early '90s in Ohio) but still went Republican, and Professors and Grad students maybe leaned Republican, while the workers at the facility tended to lean Democratic....

I regret not having actually visited College Station when we were living down in Houston, although I drove by it plenty of times on my way to Austin, after Texas A&M left the Big 12 to join the SEC, so can't really offer much in the way of personal knowledge other than a few Grads that I used to work with a couple years back...

Pretty confident on the College Station numbers, and obviously this is the type of place Democrats need to be somewhat competitive in if they hope to win a statewide election in Tejas...

Few things make me smile more than knowing Starkville voted for Hillary and Oxford voted for Trump.

hehehe....

Hoping just maybe to see the same results between Tuscaloosa and Auburn

Both working and middle class public universities that accepted that the times were a changin' in the  legally codified White Supremacist era of the Jim Crow Deep South, and instead of standing in front of and blocking the doorways, chose to open them instead.... Smiley

Although, been a big 'Bama ball fan, since the early '00s when my buddy Ray who grew up in Tuscaloosa told me about the legend of U of A football coach Bear Bryant, and we were watching college ball games all day long every Saturday, in many ways College Football in the segregationist states of the South, tell a much larger story and weave a complicated tapestry.

Basically Bear Bryant forced arguably the most segregationist Governor of the times in Alabama to step down, and integrated the University of Alabama football team, and George Wallace couldn't block that doorway...

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1616387-how-bear-bryant-became-the-branch-rickey-of-alabama

So, with you man on the Mississippi front when it comes to Starkville/Oxford, and how gradually public colleges and universities in the Deep South are making first downs and forward progress, against a system that for so long was inaccessible to both African-Americans and 'Po Whites alike back in the days....

Unfortunately haven't seen some of our informed MS posters like OneJ and Del Tachi post to provide their local knowledge, but one must certainly wonder how long the current status quo will stand, with aging White rural and Small town precincts voting overwhelmingly Republican, while at the same time their grandchildren see the world very differently....

SEC West:

University of Alabama:

Tuscaloosa City 2016 GE PRES

HRC:       17,224     (61.3%)        +27.4% HRC
Trump:     9,527      (33.9%)
Misc:        1,357      ( 4.8%)
Total:      28,108

Looks like the overwhelming Republican numbers in Tuscaloosa Came from Northport and rural areas, such as Coaling and Cottondale, throw in a Corker and Brookwood for good measure, et voila....

Roll tide roll....

Sun Belt Conference:

New Mexico State University:

Las Cruces, New Mexico:

24,137 HRC (51.8 % D), 17,124 Trump (36.7%)            + 15.1% D

A Sampling of precincts around the University, where there is a large college population look to be about 2:1 HRC.

It is notable the size of 3rd Party Vote here, which is a bit larger than that we have observed in many other large college towns....

Since I was in the neighborhood....

Big 12 Conference:

Texas Tech University:

Lubbock, Texas:

24,900 HRC (31.1% D), 50.556 Trump (63.1% R)                          + 32.0% R

These results are not completely surprising, but it is interesting to note that this City of some 230k individuals is now only about 55 % Anglo, with the numbers dropping to about 40% for people under the age of 18....

So although the University in Lubbock only accounts for about 20% of the total population of the City, you have a large local workforce employed by the University, and a significant changes some  10 years from now in terms of the composition of the electorate here.

So, while we're roaming around the Borderlands...

https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=9566

Figured we would roll over from the Las Cruces, which is many ways a sister City of El Paso, after having checked out what's going on up in Lubbock.

Was hoping to have Albuquerque results ready to be published, but unfortunately that has been a bit more of a challenge than I anticipated....

Conf US- West:

University of Texas- El Paso (UTEP)

El Paso, Texas:

125,509 HRC (67.7 % D), 49,012 Trump (26.4% R)                          + 41.3% D

So again obviously a few things stand out, which is relatively low voter population, in what after all is a City of 660k+ and also the 6th largest City in Texas....

One must certainly wonder about the potential future implications for Texas Elections if El Paso actually starts voting in numbers more representative of the VAP share of the electorate...

Side note, I always appreciate counties, especially large population counties with tons of precincts that actually have consecutive precincts by municipality since it takes what might easily be a 2-3 hour project and turns it into a 20-30 minute project... Smiley

SEC-EAST:

University of Florida:

Gainesville, Florida:

50,884 HRC (68.1% D), 19,156 Trump (25.6% R)        + 42.5% D

No real surprises here, but would be interesting to compare/contrast against '12 GE PRES results to see if there were turnout issues and 3rd Party swings among core Democratic constituencies...

Mississippi is so far the only state to have its flagship university in a town that voted for Trump, though North Dakota is likely, and Alaska is a possibility.

Few things make me smile more than knowing Starkville voted for Hillary and Oxford voted for Trump.

This is interesting as so far every other state has its flagship university vote to the left of its land grant/Ag university. The only other is Ohio where despite its names (Ohio U and Ohio State) Ohio State is bigger and for all intents and purposes the flagship school, and even then there was less than 1% difference.

SEC-East

University of Georgia:

Athens, Georgia....

29.603 HRC (65.1% D), 12,717 Trump (28.0% R)      + 37.1% D

Spent over 30 minutes mucking around with Athens and precinct results from Clarke County, only to discover that the City and County are now one political entity !!!???

Unless anyone can tell me otherwise, at this point I will assume the City results equal the County results....

ACC- Atlantic:

Wake Forest University:

Winston-Salem, North Carolina:

63,175 HRC (64.5% D), 30,502 Trump (31.1% R)                      + 33.4% D

EDIT: There about 20k absentee votes in Forsyth County that can't be broken down by municipality, so these numbers will likely shift around a bit on the margins.

ACC Atlantic

NC State:

Raleigh, North Carolina:

143,762 HRC (66.3% D), 61,479 Trump (28.3% R)                    + 38.0% D

*** This one was a bit complicated with all of the split precincts, so included those >50% within City limits and excluded those < 50%... still likely doesn't appear to move the numbers that much regardless.

ACC Atlantic:

Clemson University:

Clemson, South Carolina:

2,125 HRC (46.0% D), 2,016 Trump (44.5% R)            + 1.5% D

Now one complicating factor is Pickens County, South Carolina engages in a practice, which what is one my my worst beefs when it comes to how some counties report precinct level data....

They simply throw absentee votes into a giant "absentee vote" precinct bucket, so it is impossible to tell where these votes were actually cast!!!

Not to pick on Pickens County (Groan pun intended), but this is same type of crap that Lancaster County Nebraska (Lincoln) and some other counties throughout the US do, including several counties in Oregon that were doing that as recently as 1988....

How can students of Political Science analyze data, when the County Elections departments aren't making the data more transparent?

We have enough problems trying to look at college student voting patterns as it is, with students from out of state and other in-state counties voting absentee at their parents home locations, college students that can't afford to live in overpriced student ghettos, and instead commute from the neighboring town over when you can actually rent a one or two bedroom apartment for relatively cheaply without roomates, students living in and attending community college in one City, while taking a few classes at the University until they can transfer over their cheaper 100/200 level courses, into the University, etc....

Slight OT rant, but still relevant----

One other item regarding Clemson, is that you have one precinct located in Anderson County (Bishop's Branch) that I did not include, since it appears to be a split precinct where the overwhelming majority of voters don't reside within the City....  Anyone want to make a case as to why we should include this precinct go ahead, but at this point I consider these the "best numbers" available for Clemson.

SEC EAST:

University of South Carolina:

Columbia, South Carolina:

14,393 HRC (65.0% D), 6,199 (28.0% R)          + 37.0% D

So---- ok if anyone is wondering why these numbers are so low (They include both the Columbia City precincts located in Richland and Lexington Counties), it goes back to what I consider to be an extremely egregious form of statewide election reporting, that is apparently how South Carolina officially reports their elections...

Richland County has almost 56k "absentee" votes (32% of County Vote Total not accounted for by precinct)....

Lexington County has slightly over 27k absentee votes (22% of County Vote Total not accounted for by election results).

Needless to say, this makes it impossible to break down the numbers by precinct and municipality in precise detail...

Still, the absentee votes for Richland County broke down (69-29 D), with same day County Votes (62-32 D), and considering the prevalence of early voting among African-Americans in many Southern States, it is not unreasonable to assume that Columbia was even much more heavily Democratic than the city coding numbers suggest....

The Columbia City portions of Lexington County are a slightly different beast, and of 2k total "same day" votes Trump won it by 50, but again who were the absentee voters from West Columbia?

We can see how 18-29s with a college degree voted by state (yes, this might vary a little- I do agree that the "State Name STATE" school is usually more GOP than the "University of State Name" school) in 2012 and potentially use this as a good starting point for undergraduates (above 49% probably means a Democratic win with third party support levels from 2012):

Utah- 32% Democrat
Wyoming- 32%
Louisiana- 35%
Alabama- 37%
Idaho- 40%
Oklahoma- 40%
West Virginia- 40%
Tennessee- 41%
Arkansas- 41%
Nebraska- 41%
South Carolina- 42%
Kansas- 42%
Mississippi- 43%
Kentucky- 43%
South Dakota- 44%
Texas- 45%
Indiana- 45%
Georgia- 45%
Alaska- 46%
North Dakota- 46%
Missouri- 49%
Montana- 50%
North Carolina- 50%
Ohio- 51%
Arizona- 52%
Virginia- 53%
Michigan- 56%
Wisconsin- 57%
Pennsylvania- 57%
Minnesota- 57%
Florida- 57%
Colorado- 57%
New Hampshire- 58%
New Mexico- 58%
Iowa- 59% (given the trends of Iowa from 2012-16 and the lack of an age gap in the state, this may have been somewhat different in '16)
Illinois- 59%
Delaware- 59%
Connecticut- 59%
Oregon- 61%
Nevada- 61%
New Jersey- 62%
Maine- 63% (again, this margin might be less in '16)
Maryland- 63%
Washington- 64%
Massachusetts- 66%
California- 66%
Rhode Island- 66%
New York- 68%
Vermont- 75%
Hawaii- 79%
DC- 85%
(Data gathered from this infographic: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/06/10/upshot/voting-habits.html)

While millennials as a whole swung Republican in 2016, it is likely that college-educated millennials did not due to Trump's unpopularity with the group.  From what we found in this thread, combined with these numbers, trends from 2012-16, and general understandings about the student bodies, here is what I would say for the Power 5 conference schools' undergraduate student bodies:

ACC: Trump: Clemson, Louisville, NC State (narrowly)
Clinton: Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech (narrowly), Duke, UNC, Wake Forest (narrowly), Virginia, Virginia Tech (narrowly), Notre Dame (narrowly), Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Boston College

SEC: Trump: South Carolina (narrowly), Tennessee, Kentucky (semi-narrowly), Missouri (narrowly), Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M
Clinton: Florida (semi-narrowly), Georgia (narrowly), Vanderbilt (semi-narrowly)

Big 12: Trump: Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU (narrowly), Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, West Virginia, Iowa State (narrowly)
Clinton: Texas, Kansas (semi-narrowly)

Big Ten: Trump: Purdue (narrowly), Nebraska (semi-narrowly)
Clinton: Maryland, Rutgers, Penn State (semi-narrowly), Ohio State (semi-narrowly), Michigan, Michigan State (narrowly), Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa

Pac-12: All Clinton (Utah narrowly- conservatives in Utah probably mostly go to BYU and Utah State)

Overall, I am giving Trump 24 student bodies and Clinton 41.  The vast majority of Trump's come from the SEC and Big 12.

I am not always as familiar with G5 schools, but here would be my best guesses for their undergrads:

American: Trump: East Carolina (semi-narrowly), Houston (narrowly), Navy, Memphis (semi-narrowly), SMU (semi-narrowly), Tulsa
Clinton: Cincinnati (narrowly), South Florida, Central Florida (semi-narrowly), Temple, Connecticut, Tulane

C-USA: Trump: Marshall, MTSU, Western Kentucky, North Texas, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, UAB
Clinton: Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Old Dominion (semi-narrowly), Charlotte (narrowly), UTSA (I'm honestly not sure about the racial demographics there, but that will be important), Rice (narrowly), UTEP

MAC: Trump: Miami (OH) (semi-narrowly), Central Michigan (narrowly), Ball State, Bowling Green (narrowly)
Clinton: Akron, Ohio (narrowly), Buffalo, Kent State (semi-narrowly), Western Michigan (semi-narrowly), Eastern Michigan, Toledo (semi-narrowly), Northern Illinois

MWC: Trump: Air Force, Wyoming, Boise State (semi-narrowly)
McMullin: Utah State (narrowly)
Clinton: Colorado State (semi-narrowly), New Mexico, San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State, UNLV, Nevada, Hawaii

Sun Belt: Trump: Troy, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Idaho (semi-narrowly), Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Coastal Carolina (semi-narrowly), Texas State (again, I'm not really sure of the racial demographics)
Clinton: Appalachian State (semi-narrowly), Georgia State, New Mexico State

Remaining Independents: Trump: Army
Clinton: UMass
McMullin: BYU

Of these, I have 33 going for Clinton, 30 for Trump, and 2 for McMullin.

My overall FBS estimates are 74 campuses for Clinton, 54 for Trump, and 2 for McMullin.  The overall popular vote is probably a bit worse for Trump than that sounds, as Trump isn't racking up the 90-10 margins from anywhere like Clinton is from places like Berkeley, Washington, and UCLA.  I would guess that the overall popular vote of FBS students is similar to the overall millennial popular vote because they are academically relatively elite (leaning towards Clinton), but also more affluent and more white than their generation as a whole (which could be good for Trump).

Sun Belt Conference:

Arkansas State University....

Jonesboro, Arkansas:

8,396 HRC (33.9%), Trump 14,823 (59.8% R)                                    + 25.7% R

Very interesting.... not sure if anyone has insights onto Jonesboro and Arkansas State University, but it does seem a bit odd that it voted much more heavily Republican, than even "Whiter" College Cities in the Cotton Belt and Appalachia....

A possibility (that may be impossible to confirm) would be that Arkansas St. had a higher percentage of the vote coming from undergraduate students compared to professors and academics (including grad students).  It is possible that groups on campus made more of an effort to get students to vote at their campus address (rather than their parents' house) than at some other universities.  It wouldn't surprise me if the undergrads at somewhere like Arkansas St. voted 60-75% Trump (depending on the racial demographics of the student body, which I'm not sure of), which offset the professors and academics in town.  Unfortunately, other than seeing how many votes were cast in the campus precinct (which can be very low and reflective of student bodies as a whole if a group of one party encourages it and the other doesn't, for example) or popular off-campus residence areas for students, it's impossible to confirm or deny this theory.
Your thinking is exactly the opposite of the truth.  The city is the conservative base, not the University.
