Six counties in California didn't vote for Nixon ever, that's MORE than voted to re-elect Carter or Mondale ftr.

Those six are:

San Francisco, Alameda, Yolo, Plumas, Sierra, and Shasta

Half of these are the strongest D counties in the state and have been since JFK.

The other half are part of The Dixie North which voted Solid D through The New Deal and didn't really flip until Carter bungled the water crisis and Reagan came in.

I'm sure there were many, many more counties (such as Madison, ID and King, TX) in which Clinton received a lower percentage of the vote than the "prairie populist"; in fact many entire states meet this criteria: KY, MT, ND, SD, WV, WY.

I wonder if any such counties were carried by Clinton?

California prior to the fall of the Soviet Union is fascinating.  It was basically a Lean R state all the way from 1884 to 1984, except it absolutely loved FDR and voted left of the nation for him every time.  Then it reverted right back to Lean R in 1948.

Probably a Southern and/or working class county of some sort, especially in Appalachia.

I think he meant counties Clinton carried but she had a lower % than McGovern did.

I can certainly note:

  • Deer Lodge, MT
  • Silver Bow, MT
  • Carlton, MN
  • Lake, MN
  • St. Louis, MN
  • Douglas, WI
  • Jackson, IL (not smaller by margin)
  • Charles City, VA
  • Duval, TX
