Senate counterpart to the House bill.

I'm hopping off for the night, but I'll be happy to discuss Siren's ideas (like a timetable for withdrawal or requirement for congressional renewal) tomorrow.

Okay this is linked with the deal.

Limits on the mission (assuming they still comply with the deal) can be attached in this Bill.

It pains me to say it, and I would love to push for any other kind of solution if there was one, but I'm afraid there's no other choice than to support the bill.

As I said in the other resolution being debated, I will consider supporting this if we add a timetable for withdrawal.

Whatever amendments are offered here can be offered in the House. But I cannot offer any here. Tongue

I support this bill. Nobody wants to be in this war, and it was caused by a foolish preemptive strike. However, the fact remains that we are at war, and I see no reason not to acknowledge the fact. This bill will not start a new war, nor will it escalate a current one. Rather, it will merely give the assent of Congress to a war that we are already fighting.

The most we can do out of our current situation is beat the North Korean government and then figure out what the hell to do afterwards. We may already be in combat, but I will only be comfortable voting for a formal declaration with a clear timetable.

We gotta hammer this out immediately.  What would be a good timetable?  Will our presence be required for more than one year?

I don't think any of us are military aficionados (if somebody is, feel free to chime in), and tbh, I'm not really sure what exactly our mission is either. But if I'm just randomly coming up with an idea from the hip, a year sounds good. It should probably be a point at the start of the time table is when the withdrawal begins with the full withdrawal happening over the period of a few months after the initial date.

Though I'm no hawk, I would be more comfortable with 18 months or something like that. It gives us a bit more breathing room than a year would to complete the mission right, and with an opponent like North Korea, there's far more unpredictability than the other countries we've recently gone to war with.

I'd be okay with that if it means getting a timetable. I guess the president can always leave earlier if needed.

I think that's an acceptable timetable.

If the Congress desires to place an ultimate date for the withdrawal of all troops from the peninsula, then this is the way to do it. The grammarian in me would like to see a comma added after "North Korea" (as is the bill could appear to read "the mission is over; also remove all troops by 3/1/19").

Hearing no objection, the amendment is adopted.

The question is now on the table.  Senators, please vote Aye, Nay, or Abstain.

This has enough votes to pass.  Senators have 24 hours to change their vote.

With the impending ratification of the treaty agreement, it would be pointless to oppose. And as I stated all along, my demand was action on the Draft Restriction Amendment, and I was happy to see that happen. I was also happy to see the addition of a timetable. The refusal to provide the Senate, who is supposed to be seriously deliberating on this issue, with the relevant classified information, is still pretty troubling to say the least. In any case:

With six votes in favor, this passes the Senate unanimously.
