http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/25/opinions/what-trumps-gut-knows-about-the-nfl-controversy-jennings/index.html

This article sums up my views on the Trump vs. NFL battle.

And before everybody screams that this is a right-wing trash piece, notice that it came from CNN.

That spectacular open-mindedness might play a part in why you guys keep losing elections.

Surely the reason democrats lost is because they didn't listen to sh**tty op-eds from Republican ghouls.

The real reason is they denied him twice on owning a franchise and he knows his room temp IQ base will chug it down.

It is an op-ed. It also offers a mystical explanation of how President Trump gets away with making his opponents ever more hostile to him while consolidating his base.

Ownership of NFL football teams is very conservative, but it is also pecuniary enough to sacrifice the political agenda of Donald Trump if such gets in the way of ticket sales, TV rights, or proceeds from the sale of team-related merchandise.  NFL owners do not want to be caught up in endorsing bad social policies. The NFL has enough problems with concussions.

Well, you know the DoD paid the NFL >$11 mil over 4 years to have the players come out and stand, needed that staged patriotism to boost enrollment! Before 09 they never came out for the anthem.

With any luck he is right and the NFL's decline will accelerate as a result of this. The league and the money surrounding it has grown to grotesque proportions, and they need to be right-sized. It's dumb that it has to come as a result of a political nontroversy, but hey.

You're probably right, because Trump is the epitome of a broad-minded, nuanced, thinker. That's what the base likes about him.

Trump doesn't know anything, he's an anger filled dementia patient who goes off on wild rants for no particular reason other than the sun has risen.

That 32% of the 49%, with the 7% who didn't have an opinion are the new center.  That breaks everything up to be like 43% who are against Trump/ 21% who are willing to vote for him /36% who are Trump's base.

If the same was the case during the election, he won about half of those who were truly undecided while Hillary maybe won like a quarter of those who blame "both sides" or neither.

ESPN has the approval of the protests at 39%, with 51% opposed, according to a new scientific poll:

Unfortunately, yes.

The democrats should be very careful about not running into the trap of being succesfully labeled as antipatriotic. Unfortunately this is a lose-lose situation for dems. If they don't support the protesters, the protesters will get mad, if they do support the protesters, the stench of anti-patriotism will linger.

Much easier being a simplist nationalist here.

I'm sure majorities disapprove of the act itself, but majorities also disapprove of blatant restrictions on the First Amendment here, so it's a win for both parties. However, in a relative sense, it's probably a win more so for the GOP, seeing as how their base is likely more complacent and despondent by default in the run-up to next year.

...so basically the cultural equivalent of "both sides do it"; something anyone can make hay over but that ultimately strengthens the GOP through its use.
