Um, WHY?

You want to unite the public against this tax bill and so at the height of the debate you decide to go with Frankenstein of all people?

The two are completely unrelated

A senator has a right to voice his objections

This is true! Still, optics.

I wonder if he now regrets voting for it in committee.  He could have stopped it there.

Here's the long list of amendments that have been submitted. Amendments have been submitted by members of both parties. Note that not all amendments will receive votes. https://www.rpc.senate.gov/tax-cuts-and-jobs-act-reconciliation-tracker

So, a 51-49 vote ready to pass before the bill that they're voting on has even been decided. I'm going to go ahead and say this is not regular order.

What does it take for an amendment to get voted on?

Good reason exists for pushing it today. Tomorrow is Saturday, and there could be mass rallies and protests if the bill is up for a vote. It is difficult to vote in the presence of large protests and demonstrations. Republicans want a done deal that will Make America Great Again -- for someone like a plutocrat of the 1920s.

Tomorrow is supposed to have unusually good weather for early December.

Yeah, I really want to know this too. In particular, how many of the Dem amendments do they have to vote on?

Also, what do we know for sure is in the bill?

By McCaskill tweet, we know that

1731
1730
1729
1728
1735
1724
1723
1685 (deduction only for religous private schools and not secular ones??)
1684
1678
1715
1622
1631
1764
1711
1632
1588
1756
1793
1630
1615
1690
1809
1613
1745

are included.

I'm assuming by her statements that either Collins' 1590 or 1591 is in.

Anything else we know for sure?

This bill also still has to go to conference. If Collins amendments are all stripped out, I could see her voting no on the new bill. If Corker votes no tonight, then he'll probably vote no on the conference'd bill. I'm trying to figure out who the third no vote would come from.

Douggy Jones.

If it is indeed necessary to vote again, and this vote is 50-50, it could make people more motivated to turn out for Doug Jones.

...And it can make people more motivated to turn out to vote for Roy Moore.

Have any of you in either party stopped and realized that Republicans get elected promising tax cuts and Democrats get elected by promising more programs?  I mean it's hilarious how both parties always insist they're right on this matter and it can never be any other way.  Tax brackets don't change when the economy is doing well, but I'll take the extra $1,000 I'll save over the next year.  I've been against the tax increases in 1993, the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, and thought the Obama administration should've allowed them to continue at lower rates in 2010 due to the sluggish economy.  In other words my position on taxes for the past several decades has always been to leave them alone.  Control spending first.

"Regular Order", guys.

Also, as to the post above, all we're trying to do right now is figure out what's in the bill.

For instance, does anyone know which of Collins' amendments are in (other than the two I listed above).

This would not help Roy Moore; the tax bill has extremely high disapproval.

Agree, though there is some ambiguity in court precedents as to whether Congress can favor religion (generally) over non-religion. I think the answer should be no, but some courts would rule the other way.

If enough Democrat Senators played the delay game regarding throwing votes in to send the bill back to committee, then we would have had a real shot at delaying the bill until McCain had to go back to Arizona continue his cancer treatments, which would have costed the Republicans a yes vote.

You do realize how underhanded the Democrats would have looked doing that, right?

And we should care about that...b/c?

Anyway too bad the Dems wussed out and stopped introducing those motions

Apparently the parliamentarian is running through the whole bill now. They're adding debate minutes until she's finished.
