Then they'll have to pay them more, won't they?

Hahahahaha, good one. Somehow I'm not seeing a public university finding more money for grad students, especially non-STEM ones.

So you're saying universities have been overpaying their grad student assistants since they could have gotten them for less?  Doubtful.

You have way too much faith in muh free market working like an Econ 101 textbook pretends it does.

As I said earlier in the thread, I remember all the sturm und drang concerning all the dire effects of making the cash part of what graduate assistants receive taxable.  We've been here before and it wasn't the end of the world.

If it passes the House, it will pass by 2 votes with lots of people "released" to vote no.

Matt Fuller, who seems like a good whip counter, thinks there are probably 14-16 No votes. He rates 10 as No, 4 as Lean No, and 2 as Undecided (and a bunch more as Lean Yes).

Barbara Comstock voted to raise our taxes. Bad. Looks like her political savvy went out the window.

She knows she's done, she doesn't have to pretend to be moderate anymore.

Did she ever "pretend" to be moderate on economic issues?

So, people seem to be a bit surprised on the twitterz that only13 voted no.

Most estimates had it in the 15-16 range.

Is this bill even that radical anyway? The $1.5 trillion it adds to the deficit is bad, but it's a lot less radical than what the 2016 GOP candidates or even Romney in 2012 proposed. Only 13 nays is a good sign right? Anyway, I hope the repeal of the Obamacare mandate won't be part of the final bill. Including healthcare "reform" in a tax bill isn't a good idea.

Yeah, what this most indicative of is that she's going to retire and wants to keep conservative bona fide strong for future work as a lobbyist, commentator, or Statewide candidate

Speaking as a grad student, there are way too many grad students in this country. That said, ensuring only the rich can become a grad student is not the way to go.

They also need to use the "TAX RAISERS!" clubs to knock Costello and Meehan and Fitzpatrick too. I can almost see the suburban ship wreck in the distance

I can already smell the young suburban Democratic professionals Smiley.

But honestly, I don't think this tax plan will be the main cause of the coming suburban curbstomping (it's coming though Smiley). Even most VA-10, IL-06 or NJ-07 voters would see a tax cut. The problem is that the media has been covering this as if everyone in a high tax state would pay more in taxes, which isn't true.

The right-wing has always been about ensuring the protection and preservation of privilege, even at the expense of merit. America's entire educational system, but especially its higher education system, is systematically structured to favor persons with privileged backgrounds. The government's attempts at leveling this field will be seriously harmed by these Republican policies and I don't think that's unintentional.
