Pretty much sounds like Bush tax cuts 2.0. I just can't get over how conservatives were screaming at Obama over driving up debt, and now that they're in power, they don't care.

It was as predictable as the sun rising in the east. We already saw the movie before from Clinton to Dubya.

If there is to be an economic downturn (or even another crisis) sometime within the next few years, I'd rather it happen with these tax cuts already in place.  It would be all the more easier to discredit supply-side economics that way.

The 2008 collapse was supposed to do that, and then Republicans came back with a vengeance a year later anyway.

The 2008 collapse was the product of regulatory changes passed in the 1990's, not the Bush tax cuts.

That doesn't matter. Perception is reality. The public blamed Bush and the Republicans in the 2008 polls. They forgot a year later and saw the Republicans as their new saviors.

Any chance swing-district Republicans get cold feet about this after yesterday's results?

They passed a healthcare bill with a 15% approval rating. Don't hold your breath.

Where are all the pundits who criticized Democrats for "not being bipartisan enough" from 2008-2016 now that the Republicans are doing everything in secret behind closed doors?

Republicans figure they're gonna lose in 2018 anyway, might as well go out with a bang.

Probably a smart move. It's what Dems should've done in 2009-2010.

As promised, with the mandate repeal now being included, I withdraw my endorsement of the Senate Bill and urge all Senators to oppose it.

Game changer.

Pretty good news, but Johnson is a hack, so I'm sure he'll find a way to support it in the end. He did the same song and dance with skinny repeal.

People to watch:

-Johnson
-Collins
-McCain
-Murkowski

Also, the deficit Hawks: Paul, Corker, potentially Lankford

What about Flake?

Flake has no spine, sorry.

Based on what? He wrote that book knowing it would put a giant target on his back, and has been the only Republican to endorse Jones. He also has nothing to lose anymore.

The problem is that Flake probably actually supports this bill. This is a generic supply-side Republican bill. Why would a Reagan/Goldwater conservative oppose this? Most of the deficit alarmism by movement conservatives during the Obama years was fake anyway (as these conservatives all voted for the Bush tax cuts and Medicare expansion).

Yeah, most of it was fake, but Flake has a reputation for actually being one of the few principled deficit hawks even when he was in the House during the Bush administration.  The fact that he now has nothing to lose and may want to stick it to Trump is a bonus.

RIP Graduate Students, Research Programs, and Higher Education/Professionalization institutions in this country if this passes.

Music to the GOP's ears.

Something is definitely going to pass, that's for sure. The GOP can't afford otherwise. The question is exactly what monstrosity emerges from the sausage making conference committee.

I'm sure everyone's favorite RINO is jizzing up a storm right now. After all, tax cuts for the wealthy is basically the only reason s/he's a Republican.

I'd be surprised if he loved this bill. I think he's more a Republican for historical and personal reasons. "Party of Lincoln, born and raised Republican, etc." It's more of an identity and culture thing. Kind of like the inverse of those "My grandpappy would hit me with a coal shovel if I ever voted Republican" right wingers that used to dominate West Virginia, but have finally either died or switched parties once the Democrats had the nerve to betray them and elect a darkie I mean uhh...economic anxiety! Yeah, that's it.

How exactly can one keep an "open mind" about something you'd rather drink weed killer than do?

Voting it out of committee doesn't necessarily mean he'll vote yes on the final bill. McCain voted for the MTP on Obamacare repeal and then switched his vote to kill it. Who knows how the last-minute negotiations and amendments to this thing will end up.

Don't kid yourself. Johnson is and always was a safe yes vote.

Do not let Marty confuse you: When the Senate votes to bring this bill to debate today, they are voting for a plan that is primarily for the rich and powerful, that will raise the deficit by $1.4 Trillion, and that will kill 13 million people via repealing the individual mandate.

I don't think all those 13 million people are going to die.

Yeah. Just let the GOP pass all this horribly unpopular shot and maybe all the poor people who voted for them in 2016 will realize how dumb a decision that was. People have to cone to that realization on their own. Not by Chuck and Nancy telling them. Give the GOP a rope to hang themselves and I'm sure they will

West Virginians will no doubt blame Obama when they lose their Obamacare.

Did anyone else notice that all the pundits who cried about how Obama and the Democrats' bills were so mean, partisan, and divisive in 2009-2010 have all vanished without a trace?

If they want to do that under Reconcillation, under the rules of the Senate it would have to wait until Fiscal 2019, which starts a month before the midterms.

They seem to be on some kind of hubris... like they can get away with anything

Probably because they HAVE been getting away with anything. Thanks to American voters.

Government shutdowns
Unprecedented obstruction
Pedophilia
Sexual assault/pussy grabbing
This monstrosity of a bill
Divorcing themselves from facts and reality
Fanning the flames of racial resentment
Staging a coup against Obama's SCOTUS pick

The list goes on.

It goes back farther than that. The Gingrich Congress and the Bush administration were reckless and corrupt as well

At least they got punished somewhat for their overreaching. Americans have been awarding them for it ever since 2010.

Was 2012 not a disaster for Republicans in the Senate all around? And the House was worse for them than expected. And EC (Florida)

Yeah, but that wasn't a punishment for their overreach or insanity. Ever since Obama was re elected they've gone completely off the deep end, and they've done nothing but benefit from it, or at the very least, despite it.
