our anthem predates our motto. It was E Pluribus Unum until the 1950s when we decided to position ourselves as the opposite of the aggressively secular Soviet Union

That's objectively false. Not only is it not that difficult to understand for me, most people can with little difficulty (unlike with death metal or something.) If you go to a show you'll see tons of people in the crowd singing along with the dancing.
