Louisiana's 2nd congressional district in 2008. A Vietnamese-American Republican defeated a Democratic incumbent in a D+25 congressional district in the middle of a massive blue wave.

Wow... I actually had to look that up. That's quite the impressive anomaly.

My favorite candidate, if not congressional race was Republican Vernon Robinson in North Carolina, his campaign slogan was: "Jesse Helms is back, and this time...he's black!"

Minnesota 2002 was super sad you should read Al Frankens book he talks about watching it happen and being unable to stop it which is what motivated him to run in 08

Another race that imo was almost as interesting as alaska 2010 was alaska 2016 where the democrat got 4th place

Whenever a question like this comes up, I always say Missouri Senate 2000 - the election won by a dead man.

NJ-Sen 2002 was pretty wild at the end, with Republicans feeling robbed of the opportunity to run against Torricelli.

IL-Sen 2004 will always be a weird one for me, why in the name of god the ILGOP picked Keyes?  What would've happened if Iron Mike had ran against Obama?  If Ditka had won, would Trump have never happened?

Ditka would've lost badly (although not Alan Keyes-level badly) although I highly doubt he was ever seriously considering the race.  The reason no one wanted to jump in to replace Ryan was that it was clear that Obama was gonna beat anyone on the IL GOP's bench and that was before the 2004 DNC speech that basically made Obama a household name (as far as politicians go).

Anyway, the 2006 FL-16 race was pretty weird.  Not gonna lie, "Punch Foley for Negron" was a great campaign slogan.

Connecticut Senate 2006 deserves a mention. Lieberman (who only six years ago had been his party's vice presidential nominee) loses primary but forms a third party and defeats Ned Lamont in the general election.

2002 Minnesota Senate. Wellstone appeared to be a shoe-in for reelection, but he died in a plane crash just a few days before the election. Then, the Democrats replaced him with the invincible Walter Mondale whose only state won in the 1984 Presidential election was his home state of Minnesota, and somehow he ended up losing the race to Norm Coleman.

That then made him the only person to lose a statewide race in all 50 states. He lost the race for the electoral votes in the other 49 states, then he lost the MN Senate race.

Then, the Democrats replaced him with the invincible Walter Mondale whose only state won in the 1984 Presidential election was his home state of Minnesota, and somehow he ended up losing the race to Norm Coleman.

Mondale ended up losing because of the memorial that was held for Wellstone that the Republicans were able to claim OUTRAGE! over because they claimed that a couple speakers at the memorial had politicized the event.  While that was true, the event was a memorial and not a funeral, and so, partisan Democratic, pro Wellstone speeches should have been expected from everyone who watched the memorial.

That Mondale lost though is really not that 'somehow' because your initial premise is wrong.  Wellstone and Coleman were actually in a very close race, and given the swing to the Republicans at the end of the 2002 election, it's almost certain that had Wellstone lived that Coleman would have defeated him.

SC-3? (1?)...Whichever district that Mark Sanford won despite the philandering over Colbert's sister.

Even more interesting? Add up the totals of the Democrat, Libertarian and Green Party candidate. Combined, they got more votes than Murkowski.
