After the Las Vegas attack how will public opinion swing on gun politics?

If Sandy Hook didn't change anything this certainly won't.

This is another one of those issues where we have to wait for *THAT* generation to die before we make any progress whatsoever.

It won't change anymore than another hurricane would change public opinon on disaster relief or another DUI-caused death would change public opinion on prohibition. It won't be long until the news cycle forgets about the Las Vegas shooting and it's seen as just another shooting.

I've only heard of one person whose mind has changed, and it was one of the artists performing at the event.

All of my older relatives doubled down on how we don't need more gun control. Almost everyone else I know is pleading for gun control. It's the same as after Sandy Hook.

I honestly hope the shooter had not been diagnosed with any mental illness so that people stop using that as an excuse to ignore gun control.

Unfortunately, stay the same. The people who are for stronger laws now, also were for stronger laws last week.

I think the bigger problem is not public opinion, but lobbyists of the NRA and gun industry. In this field, we should really drain the swamp.

The best that we can hope for is that this tragedy quashes that silencer legislation that's making it through Congress, but sadly I think that's still too high of a bar for Congress to meet. Nothing will change.

Yet another person who doesn't know how suppressors work.

So to all, suppressors on a long gun only lower the noise by a few dB. It's not like James Bond with a silenced PPK or something.

Those wanting reform want it more than ever.

Those not wanting it will set record sales of firearms worried about the former.

So, no change.

This.

It may be for longer than a week, but when there's a murder of someone that could have lived if only they had a gun to blow their attacker to Kingdom Come, it'll shift back.

Public sentiment will be much for gun control, but the gun interests will double down... and win big.

After all, the acceptable solution to gun violence according to the weapons industry is "even more and deadlier firearms".

Thune says the Senate might take a look into bump stock restrictions. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-thune-says-i-think-well-take-a-look-at-bump-stock-device-restrictions/

Meanwhile, the typical same-old, same-old responses:

"We can have that discussion at another time," said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina. "But it's a typical political tactic by some on the left."

Sen. John Kennedy, R-Louisiana, said "I do not think that the United States Congress can legislate away evil."

There is a real chance of bump stocks being banned. They're selling like crazy right now. One of my deplorable friends posted on FB about wanting to buy one literally the afternoon after the LV shootings, which was too much even for me.

They aren't even any good is the thing. You sacrifice a ton of accuracy for a tiny bit of a recoil bump. I wouldn't attach one to my rifle if I was given one for free.

The moment this country decided to look away when children were mass murdered, you knew it was over.

NRA supports new rules on bump stocks. This is a groundbreaking development. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/05/us/las-vegas-shooting.html

Bump stocks generate little profit for the firearms industry. Easy sacrifice.
