Republicans chose Rick Saccone last week. Democrats make their pick today.

He's alright. Cerilli seemed like a stronger candidate based on her ideology and support of Trump (in 2010) but I don't know much about Lamb to be honest.

I thought Cerilli was just a standard conservative Dem , does she really support Trump if so why did she run for the nom?

Who does everybody think are the best candidates for this race? I'm leaning towards Mike Crossey and Gina Cerilli.

I seems being nasty was the cause of Murphy stepping down. In a quick review I did not see this reason posted.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/7/1705083/-PA-18-Tim-Murphy-isn-t-out-because-he-s-a-hypocrite-it-s-because-he-was-an-abusive-boss

It is hard to believe that anyone would just be nasty like this in an office anyone posting here would love to have.

He resigned for a scandal about him having a mistress, who he forced to have an abortion.

He resigned for a scandal about him having a mistress, who he forced to have an abortion.

The Daily Kos says he resigned due to staff abuse charges. As a left of center person I thought you would accept the Daily Kos as a source.

Another article

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Murphy_(American_politician)

confirms this.  Murphy announced he would not run in 2018 on 10/4 due to the abortion, marital, affair, and divorce mess.  In the next 24 hours he was hit with staff abuse charges. On 10/5 the leadership decided those charges would have to be investigated.  To avoid the distraction the leadership asked him to resign.  He did so on 10/21.

Actually the abuse charges I think were worse than the other charges.  I actually do not think the House would even have investigated the marital/divorce charges as their were no charges of abuse.

I do not think House ever investigates divorces or marital affairs were no abuse is charged.  They probably would not be able to investigate anything else, if they did.

Do the Democrats have any shot at getting this seat or coming close?

Not really. Like all PA it's gerrymandered to hell and back.

I don't think that makes much of a difference in this district. Even if it were a compact district anchored in the corner like the old PA-20, it'd still be a very tough district (maybe R+8 instead of R+11). It's apparent by the inclusion of Westmoreland County over Fayette that not even Republicans knew how much Western PA was going to swing their way. Still though, a lot rural Trump areas have swung hard against Republicans in special elections as of late. Democrats shouldn't automatically concede though. Pennsylvania is prone to large swings and Republicans went far-right with their pick. It's worth a shot, especially if the political environment is even worse by March.

Looking at the other R+11 seats and considering how many were competitive in 2008, it's not impossible. Dems won both PA-12 and NY-27 in special elections under comparable boundaries in the Obama era when Dems were riding high. It feels unlikely, but this is a seat where a shock Dem win is conceivable if the bottom is falling out under Trump.

Florida    8th    R+11    Republican
Indiana    2nd    R+11    Republican
Iowa    4th    R+11    Republican
Montana    At-large    R+11    Republican
Nebraska    1st    R+11    Republican
New York    27th    R+11    Republican
Ohio    5th    R+11    Republican
Oregon    2nd    R+11    Republican
Pennsylvania    3rd    R+11    Republican
Pennsylvania    4th    R+11    Republican
Pennsylvania    12th    R+11    Republican
Pennsylvania    18th    R+11    Republican
Texas    2nd    R+11    Republican
Texas    25th    R+11    Republican

I can't believe Dems let Murphy run unopposed TWICE, candidates have ran in far redder districts in far worse years.

Republican candidate is a "Right to Work" advocate and voted to lower prevailing wages, unlike Murphy, who was union-friendly.

That might give us a fighting chance if he's alienated the unions in that area. Hopefully we have a strong candidate here. I think Gina Cerilli is probably the strongest since she's from Westmoreland county which is the most Republican leaning part of this district. If she can keep margins relatively close there and can do well in the Democratic leaning areas she has a decent shot at this. She's pro-life which in the context of Murphys seat probably makes her a strong candidate.

Lamb got picked as the candidate. I think he can reach into the suburban appeal, but he's not a social conservative.

If the court case pans out in Dems favor and lines are redrawn would the new PA-18 district be more or less R?

Stephen Wolf's non-partisan map makes 18th a Republican vote sink that is completely out of reach for Ds. As he said to me, the new 18th makes the current one look like a swing district.
