HOW IT BEGAN

FEBRUARY 1995:EASTWOOD HINTS AT PRESIDENTAL BID IN OSCAR AWARD SPEECH

Clint Eastwood in his Lifetime award achievement acceptance speech went political unexpectedly.

He told the viewers starting in a little joke that this is the best time to happen to him since the Republican wave in the Midterms in November.

Eastwood would after that joke go back to his acceptance taking the voters and viewers throughout his career.

But at the very end he claimed that and we quoted.
"With this I gotta say. With all the support that I have gotten through the years. You would vote me in as president he and the crowd then laughed thinking that it was just a joke to poke how he has been the 20th century's most popular actors.

Very interesting with Clint Eastwood at the presidency of the United States. He will make America's Day.

If it's set in the 1990s, Eastwood actually received his Academy Award in February 1993, not 1995, for his movie Unforgiven (1992).

But, keep it up.

The Reaction

Pundits laughed at a chance of a President Eastwood thinking it was just a joke criticizing the Clinton administration.

However thanks to the rise of the internet a movement online to get Eastwood to run for President started mainly by regretted Clinton voters and Perot voters

The website Eastwood96 dot com recieved about 20,000 hits on its launch however even with that Eastwood still hadn't said if was really going to run.

Meanwhille Clinton had a lukewarm approval rating and while the economy was doing well most of it was thanked too the .com bubble and the Republican congress.

As spring came began Republicans started declearing runs for President

Bob Dole the frontrunner was the first one to do so and following him was Steve Forbes and Pat Bucannon

In May Eastwood finally went public on the issue and said he was going to announce if he would declare or not very soon.

IM Running

In May 1995 Clint Eastwood confirmed  his run for President on CBS Sunday Morning confirming all the rumors and speculations aside.
He confirmed that yes that his Oscar speech was indeed a nood to a Presidental campaign.

Eastwood then a few weeks later make a speech in Downtown San Francisco officially declaring his run for the Republican nominee for president.

In his speech he vowel that he wants to take DC by storm and continue what the Republican Wave of 94 started.

He called out President Clinton and the Democrats calling them weak and liars that are trying to destroy the legacy of last two administrations

Critics and pundits saw it as a anti Dole and Establishment and Populist warcry. Especially the motto. "Drain the Swamp"

Soon afterwards Eastwood was in second place nationally behind Bob Dole in national polling however it wouldn't be long till he started hitting Iowa and New Hampshire where he could quite possibly could start leading in soon due to his populist message.

The Take Off

Through the fall of 1995 Clint Eastwood shown signs of being the frontrunner despite strong establishement critics calling his campaign "Too extreme for us"

However despite that it was a tight 3 man battle for the nomination between Eastwood, Dole and Lamar Alexander.
Eastwood's economic message of getting out of NAFTA and the WTO were popular with New Hampshire Alaska and independent voters who saw Eastwood as exciting and new rather than Dole who to them was borne get and old and Lamar Alexander well just being there.

In the debates Eastwood went hard on Dole calling out his record of helping with the tax increase of 1990 and exposed his shady pharmaceutical donors.

Eastwood was seen in the primary debates as the main winner. His speaking his charm his way of words and his plan of a across the board 15% flat tax cut and the idea of abolishing taxes like the Capital Gains, Death and Estate taxes attracted people for better or worse.

President Clinton who was popular when asked about Eastwood said that his views are too extreme for this country and that Americans should know better.

However it wasn't enough and by the end of 1995. Eastwood led Dole and Alexander by 5 points. And had a edge in some of the early primaries.

NO RAIN
Clint Eastwood was starting to lead in the state of Louisiana as the threat to Buchanan started to wear off.  On the 21th Of October 1995 in the wee hours in the morning. Eastwood returns to his hotel where we was scheduled to leave tomorrow night.  Eastwood after a long day of campaigning throughout the state  didn’t get back to the hotel until 12:30 in the morning.

Eastwood was set to immediately go to sleep in hotel room. He didn’t know his room’s next door was the room was rising rock star Shannon Hoon of the band Blind Melon.  Clint was not the only one who seemed to be in a mostly empty parking lot that night.  Eastwood pulled up next to the band’s bus and saw a man who seemed very weak and angry about something. Nothing happened until Hoon noticed Eastwood walking into the hotel. Hoon whille not knowing much about the election knew enough to know the effect of Clint Eastwood. Hoon who was too angry and frustrated to return to his hotel room unlike his band mates after a horrible preforming earlier that night in Houston Texas.

Eastwood was alerted of the yelling however could not get the bus door to open. He then alerted Hotel security to deal with it and were able to prevent Shannon from overdosing.

Hoon was taken to the hospital that early morning and Eastwood was seen as a hero of sorts.  His social conservatism began to show and that would end up helping him in the long run in being able to steal support from Phill Graham and Pat Buchanan.
