Id argue that we need to reach a higher tech level for communism to be attemptable. (Not to be confused with always successful, merely that the chance of success is greater than 0

In general, I believe government positions such as these are going to ask if one has ever called for the overthrow of the United States government. Obviously, if this person has, they have no business being in our military. That said, the very fact that he would go to West Point casts a certain amount of aspersion on his communist bona fides. I find it hard to believe that an adherent of dialectical materialism (not that there aren't other, I suppose, ways to communism) would want to further the interests of the United States government. Perhaps he means fully-automated luxury communism.

I wonder what the reaction would be if he wrote "Fascism will win" and had a photo of say Mussolini on his shirt (not to mention Hitler).

Communism is a totalitarian ideology just like fascism and if anything was responsible for more deaths. 

People don't realize it but Stalin/the Soviet Union were almost equally responsible in starting WWII as Hitler.  They agreed to divide Poland in a secret pact and Soviet troops invaded Poland from the East a week or two after the Nazis invaded from the west (in a pre-agreed plan).  Doubtful that Hitler would have risked invading Poland in 1939 if he didn't have Soviet buy-in. They also massacred tens of thousands of Poles after the invasion and carved the rest of Eastern Europe into zones which included Soviet invasion/annexation of the Baltic States, part of Romania, and outside of the agreement Finland.
