God for him sparing the military the ugliness of a trial. He should be punished harshly in the name of the men who died searching for him.

They seem to be forgotten.

There are a lot of reasons why desertion is justified (and I will give 3 right now):

  • The country gets involved in a war with very controversial motivation on the part of governmental decision to get involved, and a soldiers conscience makes them unable to support said war
  • A policy change is implemented to the organization of the military in general, that a soldier dislikes; such as a introductions of weekly and mandatory military prayer sessions, and this conflicts with a soldiers religious beliefs
  • Since governments are generally responsible for providing food to their soldiers, and are incapable of predicting what foods soldiers are going to want; they end up simply planning a pre-decided food roster to send over; and sometimes, if the government changes the roster, a soldier might no longer be able to eat the food they prefer to eat, and are used to eating

Because that's a myth. Listen to Serial season 2 for a breakdown from his fellow soldiers (who all agree that he's a POS)

I wasn't referring to the public forgetting about them.  Just some here.

Sad

Desertion needs to be legal, Soldiers should have the right to quit their job at any time just like literally anyone else in the work force.

You've done the seemingly impossible. You've united every section of Atlas. I mean, it's unity against you, but still.

The sheer absurdity of that post is astounding on so many levels.

As someone with a personality disorder, I have newfound empathy for Bergdahl. The duck dinner is sufficient punishment.

Executions should be reserved for those who not only deserted their units, but joined the enemy as well in fighting their countrymen.

Anyone familiar with the San Patricio Battalion (and their ultimate fate) should know what I am referring to:

Time: President Trump Says Bowe Bergdahl's Sentence Is a 'Disgrace.' But It's Partly His Fault

If Trump wants the death penalty for the NYC terrorist he should shut up, otherwise a judge could give him life instead.

These kind of decisions are the reason why people losing confidence in "judicary". The men and women who died searching for him and their loved ones were not remembered.

Let's be clear, a judge just sprung a traitor explicitly to punish the President for speaking out on the case.

The President needs to stop tweeting inappropriately, but the President's tweets also aren't the problem here.

Joe Arpaio behaved very badly and earned a pardon for his political allegiances.

I guess life just isn't fair.

I did a double take when I saw that because I first thought that last sentence was part of the quote and Trump just admitted to a mistake for the first time in his life.

No, it has nothing to do with punishing Trump. It's about fairness to the defendant. The argument was that he could not receive a fair sentence after the President's statement, and the judge agreed felt he was legally obligated to consider it as a mitigating factor in the defendant's favor. Now you may not like that line of reasoning, but it wasn't done to punish Trump.

We also don't even know if that actually affected the sentence or whether or not he received jail time.

I suppose the real issue here is that the President of the United States uses his Twitter account to publicly urge the Department of Justice and the FBI to prosecute his political opponents.

The punishment should've been harsher, but the outcry from the right is ridiculous. As usual, the best result lies between that advocated by Obama and that advocated by Trump.

Do you get off on this or something? What's gained by this rhetoric?

Also, FYI, the judge was Colonel Jeffery R. Nance of the Army, just to be clear. Courts-martial aren't historically known for their lienency - so the judge obviously must have been quite sure that being beaten with copper cables and held in a metal cage that was less than seven feet, all the while having dysentery for five years was sufficient punishment. Let alone that someone with his mental health issues had no business even being allowed in the Army or serving in it.
