Macron is awful, but at least he isn't responsible for the Sh**t that Merkel dealt to Greece (or, he isn't yet...) and some of his proposed reforms for the EU would probably improve it.

Considering that Macron was running against Le Pen in the run-off; that says very little...

That cartoon is laughable. Macron will never be as great of a leader as Merkel.

I would've voted for him in the first round too.

Yeah, instinctively this. Though it's a two-edged sword: he excites me more but he terrifies me more as well. Macron is clearly the high-risk/high-reward candidate. By contrast, there is nothing likeable about Merkel. Her opportunism is especially off-putting. After flooding Europe with migrants I will never feel any sympathy for her anymore. That said, any German leader will probably be better for the Netherlands than any French leader so it is very much possible that I will think about this very differently two years from now.

It's hard to say: Macron is still fairly green, while of course Merkel is part of the furniture so we know a lot about her, for better or for worse.

German politics in general is preferable to French politics, in that it is less prone to egotistical blowhards and symbolic folly, but it's hard to deny that the German domination of the EU under Merkel's lazy and managerial leadership has led to some serious disasters (Brexit, the migrant crisis, bailouts, austerity) that have put the survival of the bloc at risk.
